The State Minister for Elderly and Disability, Sulaiman Madada, has advised Ugandans to take advantage of the existing Government development programmes and get out of poverty.

The minister notes that the majority of the poorest people in the country are people with disabilities, widows, and some sections of youth but very few of them are benefiting from the Government’s programmes meant to get them out of poverty.

Madada made the remarks today while launching the Membership Empowerment Project at national level at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

“I thank and commend people who are fundraising for this project. Empowerment is giving people information and knowledge to actively participate meaningfully in socio, economic and political development. Once people are knowledgeable and informed, they are empowered,” the minister observed.

He said there are many policies and laws in Uganda to safeguard and promote the rights of all persons but many people are ignorant about them.

“This project is therefore timely. It will help Government to mobilise people to access and benefit from poverty eradication initiatives and also empower them to demand for their rights,” Madada said. “The constitution guides all development partners including Government to address the needs of people thus when we empower them we are in essence putting them in a position where they can identify and prioritise their needs and lobby the Government and civil society for support in addressing their needs.”

Singer Weasel TV nearly lost his life when he attempted to swim at hotel Africana in Kampala yet he has never stepped in even a basin of water.

Weasel had gone to African in company of his colleagues just to have fan and when the singer saw his pals swim he attempted to give it a try.

Unfortunately Weasel did not know that the swimming pool has got both a swallow and deep end.

He dived into the deeper end and he did not come on the surface for about a minute. At first his pals thought he was swimming under water until they realised that Weasel was knocking on the gates of death.

The water experts immediately jumped into the water and saved Weasel. Weasel looked helpless when he was removed from water. He took some few minutes before he could regain his conscious.

Kick boxer Moses Golola’s promoter, Patrick Kanyomozi has denied rumours in Kampala that he ran away with the gate collections in last week’s fight between Golola and Hungary’s Andras Nagy.

Golola’s promoter has told our informers at Hotel Africana in Kampala that he has not run away with millions of Uganda shillings as it has been reported in the media.

Golola’s brother, Pastor Evans Mayambala, told journalists in Kampala yesterday that all the gate collections in a fight between Golola and Hungaria’s Andras Nagy in which the Ugandan kick boxer lost to the Hungarian was stolen by his promoter Patrick Kanyomozi.

However the accused says that he handed over all the gate collections to the persons concerned and whoever wants to know who he gave the money must contact him.

As Uganda joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 63rd International Human Rights Day, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights defenders Margaret Sekagya has cautioned Parliament on the public order management Bill that is currently before the legal committee of Parliament.

She made the caution at the five day workshop  under the theme Claiming Spaces: Tactical Tools for Human Rights Defenders which attracted over 50 human rights activists including journalists and women human rights defenders from across Uganda organized by the Human Rights, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project  at Hotel Africana in kampala.

The Bill that seeks to regulate public meetings has been rejected by many organizations with claims that it violates the UN Human Rights laws.

Sekagya advised legislators to make further consultation before passing the Bill into law.

She noted that human rights abuses have been on the increase worldwide mostly-in theArab world where uprisings have taken place.

Civil society organizations have asked parliament to clean the proposed public order management bill which was tabled before parliament because in its present form is intended to violate people’s rights.

The civil society organizations made the demand a head of parliament public hearing on the public order management by the legal and parliamentary affairs committee this week.

Addressing a joint news conference at hotel Africana in Kampala CSOs which include Action Aid, HURINET and Centre For constitutional Governance said that the bill was brought in bad faith to restrict the content of political discussions and space.

The Executive Director Centre for constitutional Governance Major Okwiri Rabwoni said that the public order management bill should be regulatory but not prohibitive as it is in the current form.

Ugandan popular musician, Bobi Wine is not in good terms with Uganda police currently, so we have been informed.

Sources in police have told our informers that the singer has not paid for the police services which he reportedly hired during his recent Matyansi Butyampa music gala which took place at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

It is said that Bobi Wine hired police snifer dogs, and anti terrorism gadgets which he has failed to pay for since last month.

Efforts to get a comment from Bobi Wine are fruitless. However it should be remembered that Bobi Wine has been enjoying a good relationship with Uganda police for over a longtime.
