Ajuri County MP Dennis Obua who moved the motion to congratulate the people of South Sudan urged Parliament to commit itself to strengthening existing relations between the Ugandan Parliament and the Parliament of the new State.

He also appealed to the African Union, the United Nations and the International Community to ensure peaceful resolution of outstanding disputes between the Republic for Sudan and the new Republic of South Sudan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Okello Oryem told Parliament that Uganda had made considerable contribution to the struggle and independence of South Sudan.

He said the country will continue to support the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement.

The Minister announced government’s commitment to building a railway line that will connect Uganda to South Sudan, as well as support to the country health and education sectors.

Sudan was declared the 54th African nation following the proclamation of independence to the new state on July 9, 2011.
