The United States of America launched its direct flights between East Africa and USA in August this year. The USA flight base is in Nairobi Kenya.

The USA did this as part of its bid to review the progress of increasing their links in the aviation sector in the East African Community states of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.  The US is out to improve aviation health standards in East Africa.  The passengers and cargo between US and East Africa will have no stopovers in other countries.

The United States’ Federal Aviation Administration and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCCA) are currently reviewing their regulations in order to allow direct flights.

The flights are expected to enable East Africa to fully benefit from the United States’ Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) trade agreement that allows products to access the United States under preferential terms. Exports of East African agricultural products such as flowers and tourism to the US will increase once the flights commence.

Uganda government is preparing to expand Entebbe International Airport due to increasing tourism revenue collection. Tourism is the second largest source of foreign exchange for Uganda after remittances from Ugandans working abroad. Uganda last expanded Entebbe airport 20 years ago.

The Transport and Works Minister, Eng. Abraham Byandala says the plans to expand Entebbe Airport are feasible because of the growth of the tourism industry in Uganda. Byandala says that the ministry is to expand Entebbe airport working on a strategic plan of five years.

The minister also says that Uganda will soon be making her own aviation fuel, and build large oil reserves and an aircraft maintenance center.  Dr. Rama Makuza, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Managing director, says Uganda plans to expand Entebbe airport’s car parking by making it storied and the number of aero plane hangars will be doubled from 11 to 22.
