Ugandan candidates who sat nursing exams last year performed poorly and the ministry of education has requested them to reseat the examinations. The exam results were released Monday.

The candidates sat the exams last year in November. Out of the 2,295 candidates who sat for final examinations, from 33 accredited nursing schools in the country, majority of the candidates performed poorly.

The candidates included diploma and certificates nursing students. It was only three candidates who got distinctions, and only 647 passed with credit scores.

The examinations for the nursing were conducted by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board. The Board runs two examinations in a single year; that is in May and November. Diploma candidates write their exams in November while Certificate Candidates sit theirs in May.

The executive secretary ofUganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board, Helen Mukakarisa has attributed the decline in the students’ performance to the big number of public institutions which could be having the shortage of qualified tutors.

Students accompanied by their parent today jammed the streets of fort portal municipality in Kabarole district as they headed to school to kick start the second term of the 2011 academic year.

Business was in high gear at Mpanga markets among other supper markets as students made their final shopping expected to last them for more than a month.

Boda Boda being the most common and efficient means of transport in town, transport rates were almost doubled according to Musinguzi Nicolas a Boda Boda rider Kampala road stage.

Musinguzi explains that the increase in transport rates is due to the high cost of fuel and the high demand since most students going back to school need their services but says the good flow of business was intercepted by the poor climate citing the rains and cold clouds.

At Stanbic Bank the depositing cue was the longest as students banked their school fees followed by the withdraw cue at the Auto Transacting Machine as most parents withdrew money to cover up shopping and school fees expenses.
