Osteomyelitis is a bone infection that progressively destroys the bone and it may affect the joints, Walakira Nyanzi writes.

The infection may affect both the joint and marrow. It is a common condition in children. About 83% of it spread to the bone through the blood stream.

The rest of osteomyelitis spreads from infected soft tissue resulting from surgery or injury. Sickle cell anaemia can cause osteomyelitis infection due to reduced immunity, poorly managed wounds, poor blood circulation around the affected parts and the presence of foreign body e.g, a bullet or a screw placed to hold together a broken bone, intramuscular drug that develop in to abscesses ,as a result of walking barefoot on rough grounds.

Walking barefoot on rough grounds it can cause minor abrasions through which bacteria can enter the body leading to walking barefoot on rough grounds infections.

Osteomyelitis is also common in environment that lacks clean water because children are constantly exposed to harmful bacteria.
