Police have rejuvenated a case where Presidential Candidate Dr. Kiiza Besigye is alleged to have told the people of Amolatar in April last year that President Museveni had sold Lake Kyoga to foreign investors.

The Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura says that the police have gathered enough evidence to prove the utterances Besigye made in April 2010 to the people of Mpigi and Amolatar were false and aimed at blackmailing the name of President Yoweri Museveni.

This follows reports that Besigye, the flag bearer for the Inter Party Cooperation and the Forum for Democratic Change has been making the same “false” statements on his campaign rallies.

Police says while at a rally at Namasale landing site in Amolatar last week, Besigye incited his supporters that government has failed to prosecute him over the said remarks because what he said was true.

In expression of his disappointment, Kayihura is reported to have suspended the Deputy Criminal Investigation Director Moses Sakira for having not handled the case appropriately and mismanaging the records. Now the police chief has resurrected the case and it is being forward to the Director of Public Prosecutions so that a formal case is opened against Besigye.

Retired Col. Kiiza Besigye who is contesting against the incumbent Museveni of NRM for the third consecutive time has in the past faced many related cases including rape and treason during the 2006 presidential campaigns  and won all the cases, but after rigorous court proceedings.
