The affected districts that are facing a high risk of mortality as a result of lack of blood include Arua,Gulu,Mbale and Kampala Hospitals.

Different Government agencies led by the Uganda red cross have launched a mass drive across the country to collect blood from donors to in a bid to save lives.

Irene Nakasiita from the Uganda red cross said that 170,000 units of blood are required to reach the targeted demand of   360,000 units to sustain the whole country.

She says the shortage is as a result of many Ugandan’s and patients who need blood to survive.

blood donation saves lives

The medical superintendent lira referral hospital Dr. Jane Acheng Ocholo says the deceased passed away on Saturday because of severe anemia.

Ocholo explained that Achen was admitted to the hospital in the 2^nd stage of her labour after losing a lot of blood. She says Acheno was discovered be severely anemic and needed blood transfusion but there was no blood to save her life.

The second woman Eunice Achola reported to the hospital on the 25^th of May 2011 with high fever but diagnosed with Malaria.

She says that the hospital had run out of blood on the 22^nd of May 2011 as there was no kit to screen blood from donors.

Henry Ligale the hospital administrator of Lira referral hospital says they only received 25 units of blood on Tuesday but it may not last for two days.
