Dangers of skin lightening creams are so many and many skin lightening creams cause cancer.

Skin lightening creams inhibits the production of melanin (kills body natural protection). The skin is more susceptible to skin cancer and uneven colour. Hydroquinone is a multi-organ toxic chemical that is rapidly and extensively absorbed through the gut and it may damage the liver, and also cause irreversible damage to the connective tissue in the skin and cartilage.

It results in a bluish-black discolouration of tissues and patched skin. The way forward for skin lightening creams: relevant regulatory agencies must be put in place to stop importation of these products and the government departments must investigate the different brands of skin lightening creams on the market.

The government should continue to carry out continuous campaigns to raise awareness, and a law should be enacted to shift the mandate of cosmetics from Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and National Drug Authority (NDA) to another body such that the amount of cosmetics that enter Uganda can be regulated.

Youth Exchange and Study (YES) is a program that was established in October, 2002 and sponsored by US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to provide scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend up to one academic year in the U.S.

The program is vital to expanding communication between the people of the United States and the partner countries in the interest of promoting mutual understanding and respect.

Students live with host families, attend high school, engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about their countries and cultures.

The program can support students with disabilities and encourages their participation. ECA works with Mobility International (MIUSA) to provide students with disabilities with leadership-building workshops and appropriate information and support as needed to enhance their year in America.

From 2003 to the present a total of 3,480 students have participated in the YES program. During the coming academic year 2009-10, approximately 1,000 students will join the program from: Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia and other countries

Upon their return the students apply their leadership skills in their home countries. In addition, alumni groups have formed and been involved with many community service activities including clothing drives, mentoring younger children and English teaching, immunization drives, and much more.

The YES program is currently administered by four organizations and their partners in each country.

AFS-USA implements the YES program in Egypt, Ghana, and Kenya

Makerere University has finally managed to make sanitary pads under trade name ‘mak sanitary pads.’ The pads have been manufactured by Makerere College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology.

The spokesperson of Makerere College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, Better Kyakuwa tells this reporter that the pads they have made are of good quality and that the Uganda National Bureau of Standards has already certified the quality.

The mak pads have been made in two types: One for bed time (when a woman has just delivered). The one for bed time are large. The second type is general pads. Kyakuwa says the pads are on the market and many of the customers have confirmed their goodness.

Although the Mak pads were launched recently, Kyakuwa says that they have officially distributed them to most shops in Kampala business centre today.

The A4C coordinator Mathias Mpuuga says that apart from the walk to work campaigns, they will continue several activities including sensitising the public about ways of forcing the Government to find possible solutions to the country’s problems.

The development comes at a time when 3 members of the forum are in custody in Luzira over their walk to work on charges of treason.

Mpuuga says they will not retreat until there is an achievement.

He urges the public to be optimistic instead of losing hope and push harder to change the country’s situation economically.

The current country’s inflationary rating today stands at 30% as by October in records issues by the Bureau of Statistics.
