Many Christians in the Catholic Church are found of talking about Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but who was she? Mother Teresa of Calcutta is
recognized throughout the Catholic Church world wide.

Her work among the poor people was beatified
on October 19, 2003. The Archbishop of Kampala Catholic Archdiocese Lwanga Kizito says that the people who were present at this function were hundreds of Missionaries of Charity among others.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta founded the missionaries of charity in 1950 as a diocesan religious community. The charity brings together many
contemplative sisters and brothers and an order of priests.

She was born to Albanian
parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia (then part of the Ottoman Empire).

Mother Teresa of Calcutta original names Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu
was the youngest of the three children of her parents. Her parents’ family was well off for sometime but life changed overnight following the death of her father.

During her years in school Agnes participated in a
Catholic sodality and she showed strong interests in foreign missions. That was at the age of 18. She later entered the
Loreto Sisters of Dublin. It was in 1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final time and she
made her way to a new land and a new life.  In 1929, she was sent to the Loreto novitiate
in Darjeeling, India, where she chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was
assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy.

In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as a call within a call. The message was clear. The message required her to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.

She also heard another call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poor people.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta when she left Loreto, establish a new
religious community and undertaken her new work. Sister Teresa took a nursing course for several months and again returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened up a school for poor children.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta used to dress in a white sari and sandals (the ordinary dress of an Indian woman) and she began treating the poor sick people and got to know their needs through visits. In a nutshell Mother Teresa of Calcutta worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor and her love knew no bounds. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but on September 5th 1997 she died.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Col. Kiiza Besigye reportedly jumped over a live goat in Budadiri West. We have reliably learnt that it was Hon. Nandala Mafabi who took Besigye to Budadiri where he (Besigye) spent a night.

Besigye visited a place which is near a small river which the people in Budadiri call a Beach. Nandala took Besigye and other A4C officials around Budadiri town and he (Mafabi) slaughtered a goat for Besigye.

The people of Kumi gave Besigye a live goat and a ship plus a hen.

Then Besigye jumped over it. He later told the people of Kumi that he wanted to remind them when Museveni jumped over a dead cow in Sudan a few years back. He urged the people of Kumi to denounce Museveni because he jumps over dead cows.

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councilors boycotted a meeting called by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. Lukwago had called the meeting to approve the fees for taxi operators working in Kampala. The meeting failed to take place on Wednesday at KCCA head offices in Kampala.

Lukwago told journalists that it was the councilors who had requested him to call the meeting but he was surprised when the same councilors rejected the meeting they had wanted.

The councilors were supposed to endorse the 120; 000 shillings set by the KCCA director, Jenifer Musisi or endorse the taxi drivers’ proposal to pay 70, 000 shillings per month.

Only six councilors turned up for the meeting with Lukwago. We are told that the KCCA director took the councilors who were meant to be in Lukwago’s meeting on a tour of the city.

The policemen who work with opposition face to lose their jobs. A source in Uganda police have told us this evening that the inspector general of police, Kale Kayihura in a radio call message today warned that its illegal for civil servants to work with opposition members.

The source quoted Kayihura as saying that there are some police officers who leak our secrets to the members of opposition. But we are told the police’s disciplinary team is investigating the reports and the officers who would be found guilty shall lose their jobs or be demoted.

Recently the police reshuffled the policemen who were working at parliament following allegations that they were working closely with the leader of opposition Nathan Nandala Mafabi and with other opposition MPs.

Jobs are scarce in most parts of the world. In countries like Uganda, South Africa and some parts of Europe getting a job is as hard as passing through the hole of a needle. Our reporters to day bring you the problems job seekers in Uganda go through. For purposes of being accurate, we have allowed job seekers to tell you their own experience.

John Lwanyaaga: I have a degree in mass communication from Makerere University, but one day I applied for a job in European Union (Uganda) and I merged out the best.  I was promised to start the work a week after. But in the mid of the week I received a call that instructed me to give it two more weeks. At the end of two weeks, I received no reply and I decided to go there. I got the shock of the day when another person from the ruling tribe was working in my place.

Jane Nakazibwe: I hold a degree in community psychology from Makerere University.  Some employers/interviewers demand sex before they give us the jobs. This happened to me when one day I applied for a job in one of the companies owned by Indians in Kampala. An Indian told me that I qualify for the job but I had to first fall in love with him if I needed the job. I told him that I was, married the man refused. And I needed the job so…

Grace Nabagulanyi: I have a degree in business administration from Nkumba University. I had to bribe to get a job. I am working in one of the beverage companies in Uganda. The people who were on the interview panel told me that the job would be there for me only when I gave them one million shillings-my dad sold his two cows and I got the job.

Robert Musiime: I don’t have a job yet I am a graduate of Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University. I have failed to get a work because to get a job in Uganda one needs to have links with the ruling government or to be from western Uganda where president Museveni comes from.

News Release:-

This morning Africa’s largest independent oil company, Tullow Oil plc (‘Tullow’), kicked off a new business initiative aimed at attracting and facilitating further investment in the continent.

Invest in Africa aims to encourage long-term investment across the continent to help build and develop local capacity, boost domestic job markets, develop skills and stimulate economic growth.

The programme’s call to action will be supported through a unique partnership with English Premier League football club, Sunderland AFC.

As the initial Founding Partner establishing Invest in Africa, Tullow plans to secure five further Founding Partners from the international businesses community focused on Africa. These Partners will help to evolve and shape the programme in years to come.

Speaking at the launch, Tullow Chief Executive Aidan Heavey said:
“Tullow is investing in Africa for the long term and we want more businesses to do the same. Africa has been good to us, and we have been successful, but we want that success to bring growth for local people and economies too. Africa’s a great place to invest and this partnership with Sunderland AFC will allow us to get the message to a global audience. There are some great opportunities out there and we want other companies who share our vision to join us.”

Niall Quinn, Director of International Development, Sunderland AFC said:
“We are genuinely excited about this ground-breaking opportunity to bring Sunderland into new territories and the global appeal of the Premier League is something that we can harness as a powerful tool for change through our innovative partnership with Invest in Africa.

Africa’s passion for football is both heart-warming and inspirational and as a football club with community, people and international aspirations firmly at its core, there is a natural synergy between us and this wonderful continent. We look forward to growing and developing the partnership in the coming months.”

Ike Duker, Executive Chairman of Tullow Ghana Ltd added:
“While we are delighted to be at the forefront of this innovative and exciting new business programme, this is not just about Tullow. This is an initiative that can help to build stable, investment friendly environments to allow businesses to grow across Africa, create jobs and enable Africa’s people to share in the wealth and prosperity that come with it.”

Further details about the initiative including the additional partners which join the campaign will be announced at the end of the Premier League season.

FDC president, Col. Kiiza Besigye has amazed Ugandans when he told his pals in FDC that he does not call persons on MTN numbers. He says that if the call is a must he uses a call box to do so but never on his mobile phone.

Besigye has an airtel line. He barred what is on the crevasse of his heart at his home in Kasangati (Kampala) on Tuesday when he met his FDC party youth from Kampala branch.   He said this because the FDC ‘boys’ complained that he doesn’t call them and when they call him he doesn’t pick their phones. Besigye reportedly said that he calls almost every members of his party.

He went further and explained. “The only members I don’t call are those on MTN. This is not because MTN is bad but because the company hurries to give the government the details of the peoples’ calls whenever asked to do so.

He says that other companies like warid, orange, and utl don’t give all the details contained in peoples’ calls.

The UPDF have vowed to arrest Uganda ’s opposition strongman, Col. Kiiza Besigye if he dare declare a rebellion on the government of Uganda .

This follows intelligence reports that the FDC leader is plotting to declare an armed rebellion on the Kampala government.

Besigye who was the first runner up during the February presidential polls has however denied this intelligence information, saying that most of the informers no longer have things to report about.

A source sitting on the army council has told this reporter that UPDF treats all intelligence information in the same way and it can not just trash reports that the FDC leader is soon declaring a guerrilla war.

We take them seriously until proved otherwise. In a radio call message to all army detaches yesterday by Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, all commanding officers were told to be on alert anytime and get ready to quickly respond in case there is insecurity reported.

Members of Parliament have called on President Yoweri Museveni to take stringent actions government officials cited in the rampant corruption scandals instead of waiting for parliament’s intervention.

The MPs on the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee say that is currently investigating the misappropriation of US $ 14 million given to the government of Burundi from Uganda says that it’s high time that the president himself starts firing his ministers and other officials implicated in corruption scandals.

Bunyarunguru County MP Benjamin Cadet made the call to the president after the committee discovered that there is no evidence that the US $ 14 million was actually disbursed to the Burundi Government in appreciation for the efforts rendered during Uganda’s liberation struggle in 1985.

Referring to corruption in the country as Economic terrorism, Cadet said President Museveni should not wait for Parliamentary resolutions asking the accused parties to resign but he should terminate their appointments.

Ntungamo Municipality MP Yona Musinguzi revealed that out of the US $ 4 Million allocated to Burundi, scholaristic materials worth US $ 3.5 million only were delivered to the Burundi government which indicates that a balance of US $ 10.5 million was misappropriated within Uganda.

Presenting several the President’s letters complaining about Burundi’s failure to get the money, the Acting Secretary to the Treasury Keith Muhakanizi told the committee the Finance ministry is not responsible for any misallocation of the US $ 4 Million because the government of Burundi directed that the payments be channeled to Picfare Industries in order to supply scholaristic materials to the country.

Meanwhile the document presented before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee indicates that President Yoweri Museveni has directed the Inspector General of Police to undertake investigations into the matter.
