The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaning independent candidate in Butambala parliamentary by elections, who is also Butambala district Deputy Speaker, Faridah Nakiboneka has withdrawn from the race after president Museveni reportedly telephoned her today morning telling her to stand down for Kikulukunyu.

Sources privy to this information told us that Museveni promised her to stand in 2012 parliamentary by elections.

But this is not new for NRM leaning candidates to step down for official NRM candidates. In the recently concluded Kasese district woman MP by elections, an NRM leaning candidate had to stand down for NRM’s Rehema Muhindo after the intervention of president Museveni but this didn’t compel FDC’s Winfred Kiiza from humiliating the ruling party.

In Bushenyi Municipality, one Katungwe had to stand down for NRM’s Nasser Basajjabalaba when president Museveni intervened but still FDC’s Odo Tayebwa floored NRM.

In Bukoto south parliamentary by elections, Robert Rutaro and two other candidates had to quit the race For NRM’s Alintuma Nsambu after again president Museveni’s intervention but that also couldn’t withstand DP’s Mathias Nsubuga to floors Museveni’s candidate in the race.

Now people are waiting to see on 12th September whether the voters in Butambala will not reject NRM by voting DP’s Muwanga Kivumbi.

As the clock struck 5:00pm on Thursday evening, it was drizzling in Bukoto South, Lwengo district in greater Masaka.

According to Uganda’s electoral laws this is the stipulated time for starting counting poll results. The Bukoto South race attracted four candidates Mathias Nsubuga (DP), Alintuma Nsambu of NRM, Julius Sentamu of FDC and Dan Katula (Independent).

The preliminary results indicate that the FDC candidate is in the third position, independent candidate is trailing and NRM’s candidate is in the second position while DP’s Nsubuga is leading.

But it is still too early to declare who is automatically the winner of this arguably hottest race among the by elections we have had in Uganda since 2011. Just watch this site we shall keep you up dated ….

The NRM leadership is now gambling with former MP Alintuma Nsambu whose relationship with Buganda Kingdom establishment is as sour as the word its self.

Sources tell us that Nsambu is expected to use his financial martial to battle it out with DP’s Mathias Nsubuga in a parliamentary by-election in Bukoto south, in Masaka district.

Meanwhile FDC is also in search for a candidate following a bitter verbal exchange with DP over EALA elections.

The seat fell vacant after the nullification of the former area MP Muyanja Mbabali over lack of enough academic papers. Nominations for the post are slated between 13th to 14th June, 2012.

The Above the Fray fellowship gives a promising journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported stories. One fellow will be selected to report from a region lacking significant mainstream media attention. The selected individual will spend three months filing on-air and online stories for National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States.

Above the Fray fellowship is not about finding the most experienced candidate; it is about discovering the next generation of international journalists. The fellowship will support energetic, truth-seeking individuals who wish to cover under-reported regions, but who lack the means to do so.

Applicants should have at least three but no more than five years’ professional experience. Candidates must submit a bio, two recommendations, two audio or video clips, three essays and a pitch to report from an otherwise under-reported region.

Deadline for applications: July 1, 2012.
