The Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) has asked government to train medical workers with skills on screening cervical cancer so they can be posted in rural areas to help the increasing women patients suffering from the disease.

The program coordinator RHU, Annet Kyarimpa, while addressing Members of Parliament at a dialogue on cervical cancer held at Parliament said that the country has few medical workers to detect for cancer of the cervix and called for urgent government intervention.

She also asked members of parliament to prevail over government to work on regional referral hospitals which she said has few medical workers to treat cervical cancer cases and save women who take the long journey to Mulago hospital for treatment.

She adds that every year in Uganda 3,500 women are diagnosed of cancer of the cervix and that of these, statistics show that 2,500 women die of disease although when detected early, cervical cancer can be cured.

It is estimated that cervical cancer accounts for 80% of all female cancers and 40% of all cancers in Kampala’s cancer registry. Tumwesigye adds that the vaccination will target over 850,000 girls aged 10years both in and out of school that is to cost about 5.328m USD.
However, he appeals to parents and school authorities to take these girls to the nearest health facility or outreach immunization site

East African community (read Republic of Rwanda) could soon become a study centre for cervical cancer vaccine effectiveness and equity.

Rwanda has become the world’s first East African and low-income country to attain universal coverage for the life saving vaccine.

Research results of a national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme done in Rwanda in 2011 and also published in August in the World Health Organisation (WHO) Bulletin indicated successful lessons that could motivate other countries in Africa to adopt the HPV vaccine programme during their children health immunisation days.

Rwanda attained 93 per cent coverage after the first three-dose course of HPV vaccination.

The World Health Organisation urges other countries in Africa to expand their vaccination programmes to include the HPV vaccine, with due customization according to their epidemiological, economic, political, and health system contexts.

WHO reports indicates that Rwanda’s HPV universal vaccine coverage success is attributed to the use of a multi-sectoral approach involving the health and education sectors.

Centenary Bank and the rotary district 9200-the Uganda chapter of rotary international have constructed over 12 cancer clinics since last financial year 2011/2012.  The managing director of centenary bank Fabian Kasi reveals that out of the 12 cancer clinics, five (5) are in Kisenyi (Kampala), Nabweru, Jinja, Mbarara main referral hospital, and Bombo military barracks.

He says that a total of 1,780 women have been screened in these clinics for cancer. Of these four women were screened positive cervical cancer, one had breast cancer. The patients are undergoing treatment while around 90 others have been referred for additional assessment.

Medical practitioners say that the secret in the treatment of cancer, lies in early detection but this can not materialize unless access to proper medical facilities, as well as awareness about the benefits of early detection is emphasized.

Statistics indicate that only 45% of breast cancer patients and 18% of cervical cancer patients survive five years only after diagnosis, in part, researchers believe, because their cancers are diagnosed at late stages.

Wearing second hand underwear without washing them first with a detergent can transmit genital warts.

Signs of genetal warts may appear in about three months or in a year. After infection signs, pain comes when passing out urine.

Another sign of genetical warts are bleeding during sex and chronic itching in the genetical areas and throat.

Genetical warts can be closely associated with cervical cancer and vulva cancer in women because cervical cancers are also caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.

The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has called for a mandatory tasting for cancer in Uganda as way of combating the disease in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of health week in the parliamentary commission Kadaga said that the proposal for mandatory tasting was made last year but government is yet to take action.

She said that other countries have adopted the tradition and it has worked well for them

Kadaga also called upon government to fulfill the president’s pledge in the manifesto for putiing aside a fund for the vaccination of children against cancer. She called upon the mps to support the program in order to fight the increase of cancer in Uganda.

Incidences of cancer are on the increase in Uganda due to lifestyle changes such as increased consumption of fatty foods, alcohol, heavy smoking and little exercises.

The activities of the week will include among others; voluntary counseling and testing, blood donation, safe medical male circumcision, breast and cervical cancer screening, health fitness checks and exhibition from medical science providers.
