The queen of Buganda lady Sylvia Nagginda has launched the global fight action on Maternal and child health campaign with an aim of achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The MDGs that are set to be achieved through the campaign include strengthening of gender equitable national health sector action plans, ensuring health plans, reducing maternal deaths in women and children among others.

Nabagereka says the increase in maternal deaths in Uganda is due to the high corruption, the weakness in implementing decisions made, the absence of health facilities and poverty as well as unemployment which facilitates men to think in terms of producing.

The Nabagereka has urged the speaker of Parliament Rt.Hon. Rebecca Kadaga to continue advocating the girl child education, fight corruption as some of the ways in which the high levels of maternal and child mortality will be arrested.

The number of children who die due to poor feeding has dropped from 40% to 10.7% and this has been attributed to the effort of  the restored mulago mwanamugimu unit .

This was revealed by the director Mwanamugimu unit at mulago hospital Dr. Elizebeth Kiboneka while speaking during the tour of renovated mwanamugimu unit by the ministry of health officials.

She said that malnutrition which claim many children is now  dropping because the mothers are being sensitized on how to feed their children and told what type of the children should eat to their children get diseases related to poor feeding.

She asked government to recruit more nurses for mwanamugimu unit at mulago hospital because the unit has few nurses and are working as volunteers.

The  Acting Executive Director mulago hospital Dr. Byarugaba Baterana pledged that mwanamugimu unit nurses who are working as volunteers will access payroll and he added that the food cost given to the unit will be increased to checkup with the rising food prices.

He said that the unit will be given a generator to operate all the time when power is off.

The assistant commissioner for health services in the ministry of health Dr. Jesca Nsungwa that government will ensure that medicines needed for child health and nutrition are purchased at 100% to reduce the malnutrition among children in Uganda.
