The Uganda Debt network is calling for increased funding of government institutions that work on children rights if the cases of violating children rights are to be fought in the country. This as Uganda Debt Network together with Save the children launched the study of a survey that was done on “CHILDREN BUDGETING IN UGANDA” where it was found that bodies like Police Children Protection Unit are given minimal budgets to work on the many cases filed in different parts of the country.

Speaking at the launch, the Director Programs at Uganda Debt Network, Julius Kapwepwe, noted that about 70% of children cases filed at police are not investigated due to limited funds and resources to enable them do this.

The study was conducted in three districts of Napak, Nakasongola and Amuru where it was found that only peanuts is given to police children protection unit despite the huge budgets these districts receive every financial year.

Kapwepwe notes that cases like early child marriage have taken lead in the many cases filed at police saying this hinders development since uneducated children cannot be of high value to the country.

The Africa network for the prevention and protection against child abuse and neglect (ANPPCAN) says the high prices of food have led children going hungry which could impact on the low school enrolment.

APPCAN program coordinator Timothy Opobo says the high food prices are fueling malnutrition and domestic violence

Timothy says this has put lives of the children at a more risk of getting much involved in child labor, child neglect, and child trafficking among others.

He therefore called upon the government to provide meals to UPE schools and other social protection for vulnerable children by providing grants for empowerment of those vulnerable Household.
