As Uganda today joins the rest of the world to mark the global human rights day, the United Nations Human rights office of the high commissioner country representative to Uganda Uchenna Emelonye has challenged the government to work hard on improving the human rights status in the country. Uchenna adds that though it’s the obligation of the state to protect the rights of the citizens, they  claim their rights through citizen participation to create a harmonious environment for each and every one.

He called on  government  to review and reveal the command and the law in which the crime preventers are operating as they execute their duties. He said that there are still a number of gaps in the formation, creation and operations of this group which he further fears may end up abusing the rights of Ugandans.
The third prime minister and minister for East Africa, Ali Kirunda Kiveyijinja, advised Ugandans to be mindful of how to exercise their rights not to cause exclusive sections of people to enjoy these rights at the expense of the others.
However, the executive director, Human Rights Network – Uganda (HURINETMuhammed Ndifuuna said  that the steps which are used  by the state to choose the members of the crime preventers  group are not right since the community is not involved in their identification.

As the world prepares to host the UN General Assembly to debate the post 2015 agenda, Ugandan citizens are strongly demanding that their views be incorporated in the UN development agenda and also make them trickle down to the national development goals for better implementation and excellent service delivery.

Addressing journalists today in Kampala the Executive Director White Ribbon Alliance Uganda, Robina Biteyi, says the soon-to-be launched sustainable goals at the 70th UN summit on Saturday should have direct impact on issues to do with maternal health and new born, as the activists think this will directly have a reflection to reducing the number of death as a result of giving life to new-borns and their mothers.

In the Ugandan citizen report on the matters, there are calls for strong accountability and citizen participation at every level in matters of health.

However, the health Minister in the opposition government, Hon. Lulume Bayiga also reminded electorates to always demand for better service delivery from government and their leaders since they are taxed by those in power who then have to deliver services to them from the revenues collected and it is upon this point that he reminded the citizens of the maximum power they have in keeping leaders in power or ejecting them out of leadership.

The 70th Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 70) opened at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 15 September 2015. On 25 September 2015, His Holiness Pope Francis will address the UNGA, and from 25-27 September the Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda will convene. The General Debate of the 70th Session of the UNGA will take place from 28 September – 6 October 2015.

Part of Lake Victoria has been secretly sold to an investor for fish breeding, a development that has angered fishers and most Ugandans in general.

The investor has ring fenced over twenty islands on Lake Victoria. He is guarded by armed Uganda soldiers. The investor tells whoever approaches him that he has documents to prove that he bought the Lake from the government without the will of the people.

The islands which were sold to an investor include Damba, Taave, Kimmi, Mbivu, Bulago, Bubembe and Sowe. The investor has already ring fenced the area and commanded the residents to vacate the islands.

The investor moves with a fleet of soldiers whoever he goes and several people have been arrested for opposing the sale. The MP for Buyikwe South, Lulume Bayiga says that the investor reportedly confiscates property and beats up the residents who have refused to vacate the area.

The MPs now demand for answers from president Museveni following complaints by residents on the shores of Lake Victoria that they are being harassed by the investor and the police.

The members of opposition in Uganda led by Col. Kiiza Besigye have all along been telling people that Lake Victoria was sold without the consent of the citizens of Uganda.

Members of opposition are now free to start attending NRM closed door meetings if they so wish.

A source in NRM parliamentary caucus has intimated to us that the supporters of DP, FDC, UPC, JEEMA and PPP among other opposition party are free to go to Kyankwanzi when the president summons NRM cadres to go there.

Kampala Central MP, Medde Nsereko says that when NRM summons its cadres for meetings, they use public facilities so any member of the public can also go since the facilities used are owned by all citizens.

MP Nsereko is considered in NRM circles as an opposition element who contested for parliament on NRM ticket.
