Makerere University Student leaders this week petitioned Parliament to pressurize government into re-opening the institution which they said has among other things affected learning and businesses of the communities around the University.

Makerere guild information minister, Abbas Kizito, says three things are demanded in their petition which they say should comprise a commission of inquiry involving three or two student representatives and the increase of the budget allocated to the university.

This comes after days that students threatened to petition the First Lady who is the Education Minister, Janet Museveni, over the closure of the University.

However, Kizito says that once government doesn’t respond positively to their demand, they are to take another step.

Meanwhile, the Makerere University Police Commandant, Jackson Mucunguzi, has appealled to students that haven’t gone back to their homes to do so within a few days from now.

The University’s closure came into effect following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive which stated that the closure was done as a way of guaranteeing safety of persons and property.
