Women leaders in Uganda have shown concern over an increase in maternal deaths.

They say as the country celebrates 50 years of independence, more mothers are dying due to poor reproductive health facilities.

The concern was raised by the speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly Margret Zziwa during the opening of the National Women’s’ Week.

She however lauds government for continuous efforts to save pregnant mothers though several women are still facing challenges regarding access to quality health care.

Makerere University councilor to KCCA, Bernard Luyiga who had been rumoured to have crossed to NRM after the Lord Mayor of Kampala, Erias Lukwago declined to appoint him deputy mayor recently  has described the allegations against him as baseless.
Lukwago recently named Sulaiman Kidandala as the deputy mayor of Kampala declining to name Luyiga who had made an alliance with NRM councilors to back him for the same post.
Luyiga has however told our informers today in Kampala that that his ‘marriage’ with NRM councilors did not mean that he had defected to the ruling party in Uganda.
“I note with concern baseless allegations that I crossed to NRM because of Lukwago’s failure to appoint me as Deputy Lord Mayor. I wish to state categorically very cleanly that such information is coming from people who for some reasons (best known to them selves want to see me down politically), he explains.

Members of Parliament on the public accounts committee of parliament have expressed concern that the picfare industries limited went ahead to supply 300,000 T-shirts worth 1.3 billion shillings to the Burundian government as part of scholastic materials.

The government of Burundi authorized Uganda to pay the monies owed to Burundi to Picfare industries in turn for Picfare to supply scholastic materials but the mps are querying why picfare diverted from the original agreement of supplying scholastic materials to T-shirts.

The mps on this committee say that they have received some information that all the money was paid to picfare but not all the goods have not been supplied to Burundi.

The lead council of this committee Eddie Kwizera says this is one of the issues among other compensations they will raise with the president when they met him on Wednesday.

As Uganda prepares for oil production, National environment management authority is in the process of developing an oil spill contingency plan which will help in controlling of oil spills that might come up as production begins.

This was revealed by NEMA environment inspector Isaac Ntujju while addressing journalists in Kampala.

Ntujju said that oil spills has been the challenge in the oil producing countries and therefore Uganda has to be prepared in advance to avoid what is taking place in other countries.

He says that the plan is already being developed by experts and very soon before Uganda starts producing it will be in place.

He however noted with concern the need to update and develop environment legislations concerning the sector saying that the ones in place were developed without putting oil discoveries in place.

The government has expressed concern over the high number of patients’ with diabetes in Uganda.

The ministry of health has says many hospitals are reporting increased cases of diabetes in different parts of the country.

Dr. Richard Nduhura, Uganda's Minister of State for Health

The ministry’s program manager in charge of non-communicable diseases Dr. James Sekajugo says the cases of diabetes have increased by 5% over the last decade.

He says if the trend is not checked, they could be 10 times more over the next 10 years.

Dr. Sekajugo attributes the trend of increasing diabetes to the lack of physical exercise, bad eating habits, especially foods only rich in sugar, salt and fat.

He adds that people consuming alcohol and tobacco are also more prone to contracting diabetes than those who don’t

The disease has mainly been noted among the elderly above 50 years of age and the children.

The state health minister in charge of general duties Dr. Richard Nduhura says a sensitization campaign will kick off next week on how to prevent and control diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

The campaign which will be conducted at a cost of 1 million US dollars kicks of Monday next week as Uganda marks the World Day against diabetes.

Members of Parliament have demand an explanation from Government over the Inspector General of Government (IGG)’s action of withdrawing charges against personalities without clear reasons.

Parliament’s concern follow the recent sudden withdraw by the office of the IGG last Friday the case in which Prof. Gilbert Bukenya was accused of abuse of office over the award of a Shs9.4 billion contract to supply executive vehicles for Chogm four years ago, saying it wanted to pave way for the conclusion of a civil suit lodged over the same issue.

MPs including Shadow Attorney General Abdu Katuntu and Sanjay Tanna argue that the sudden withdraw of the case against the former Vice president scares as Individuals holding high offices may be in a similar way blackmailed under unclear circumstances.

Katuntu expressed optimism that the charges against Bukenya by the IGG were mere allegations aimed at black mailing him through some individuals’ influence.

Sanjay who represents Tororo Municipality says government should make a statement to parliament or a commission of inquiry be instituted to investigate the circumstances which forced the IGG to discontinue a case against Bukenya after tarnishing his name.
