New Zealand Development Scholarships: Open category (NZDS-Open) are offered to candidates from Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia. Preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged communities. New Zealand Development Scholarships are a central part of the New Zealand Government’s development cooperation programme in Africa. The NZDS scheme offers the opportunity to people from developing countries to study in priority sector courses at New Zealand universities. Scholarships are offered for postgraduate study at the Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctorate (PhD) levels. (Study at PhD level will only be considered where particularly strong development relevance is demonstrated). Undergraduate degree level study is not offered. Up to 14 New Zealand Development Scholarships are given to the region with as equitable a spread as possible across all five eligible countries. Apply for ACCES Scholarship in Kenyan Universities

ACCES Scholarship Program: The African Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) is a non-profit agency that supports Kenyan students by providing post-secondary scholarships. The mission of frican Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) is to help young Africans obtain the skills and education needed to benefit themselves and their society. The scholarships are for study at Kenyan universities and technical colleges. In addition, frican Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) runs primary literacy centres and HIV/AIDS awareness programs. frican Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) donors have helped each one by donating $400 per year or $35 per month to cover tuition fees and accommodation. Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme: The Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORS or ORSAS) grants awards on a competitive basis to international postgraduate research students of outstanding merit and research potential.

The number of scholarships available at Newcastle under this scheme varies (in 2004, 24 awards were given to Newcastle students).

Awards are made:

  • For full-time research programmes only
  • Initially for one year but may be extended up to a maximum of three years.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • the difference between the tuition fee for a home (UK)
  • postgraduate student, and the fee chargeable to an international postgraduate student
  • and does not cover living expenses.

Scholarship Application Eligibility Criteria:

You could be eligible for the ORS scholarship if:

  • you have been offered a place on any full-time research degree programme, in any field of study (except an Integrated PhD programme)
  • you have been assessed as overseas for fees purposes, and are wholly or partially self-financing
  • you intend to register to start your studies during the 2007-08 academic year

Existing students in their first year of study are also eligible to apply for one of these awards. Students in the first year of an Integrated PhD programme are eligible to apply for an ORS award.

Students entering the third year of their research programme will not generally be eligible to apply for an award.

The only selection criteria are outstanding merit and research potential.

Other factors such as finance, nationality, proposed field of study are not taken into account.

How to apply

If you are eligible, you will automatically be sent application details from the month of December onwards.

However, you are advised to submit your forms as soon as possible for them to be checked and references obtained.

Canadian Harambee Education Society Scholarships: The Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES) mission is to improve the quality of life of women and their communities in Kenya and Tanzania by providing secondary education scholarships for girls.

CHES helps girls get an education by;

  • Providing scholarships to Kenyan and Tanzanian girls who qualify for Secondary School placements, but who need financial assistance in order to attend
  • Striving to maximize students’ success in school and in their communities by supporting their learning and their transition into adult community life
  • Promoting the global commitment of supporters through sponsorship of individual students and projects
  • Building relationships and promote understanding between supporters and sponsors on the one hand and students and their communities on the other
  • Supporting special projects, such as the construction of libraries, dormitories, and computer buildings
  • Sending volunteers from the ranks of retired teachers and other professionals to act as agents
  • Raising and administering donated funds
  • Providing income tax receipts to all donors, no matter what size of donation, as a group, individual or organisation.

IFUW International Awards: The International Federation of University Women offers a limited number of international fellowships and grants to women graduates for postgraduate research, study and training.

A small number of awards may be available for Masters’ level studies.

Most of the awards are intended for the second and subsequent years of a doctoral programme and for post-doctoral studies. First year doctoral students do not qualify.

Students in any branch of learning may apply; however, priority is given to proposals related to IFUW priorities which include the improvement of the status of women and girls or women and promotion of women in scientific and technological careers. (See IFUW website for other priority areas).

The awards may be used in any country other than the one in which the applicant was educated or habitually resides.

Preference is given to women whose work will be carried out in a countries other than their home countries or the ones in which they received their previous education.

Normally 16 to 25 fellowships and grants are offered in each competition. Fellowships are the equivalent of 8,000 to 10,000 Swiss francs.

Grants are from 3,000 to 6,000 Swiss francs.

Deadline: The deadline varies by country, but normally falls between September and mid-October.

UNESCO MAB Young Scientists Awards: MAB provides 10 young researchers each year with awards up to $5,000 in support of their research on ecosystems, natural resources and biodiversity.

The MAB Young Scientists Awards targets young researchers carrying-out interdisciplinary research in line with UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.

Priority is given to projects carried-out in biosphere reserves, on the theme of ecosystems and water.

Objectives:

  • To assist exchange of information and experience among a new generation of scientists.
  • To encourage young scientists, in particular those from developing countries, to use UNESCO Man and the Biosphere research, project sites and biosphere reserves in their research.
  • To encourage young scientists to undertake comparative studies with other sites, in or outside their country.

Criteria used in the selection of the Young Scientists Award:

  • Applicants may not be older than 40 years of age
  • Priority is given to research carried-out in biosphere reserves on the theme of ecosystems and water
  • Applicants from developed countries are eligible for Award only in exceptional cases
  • Awards are set at a maximum of US $5,000 each
  • International travel expenditures are usually not covered under this Award
  • Research supported by an Award should be completed within 2 years
  • Candidates must submit their research report to the MAB National Committee for approval before submission to the Secretariat in Paris
  • Candidates agree to the possibility of UNESCO publishing the results of their research.
