The Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) has finally bowed down to public requests and criticism and switched on most of the radio stations it had switched off on January 8th this year over non payment of transmission bills amounting to three billion Uganda shillings.

The radios UBC switched off included BBC radio, Radio France International, Suubi FM, Buddu Radio, Voice of Africa, Greater Africa Radio, Bilal FM, and Italian Embassy Security Communication system.

Other communication houses UBC switched off also included Itel, Tangerine, Citizen TV, and infocom. Sources in UBC have told our reporters that most of the affected stations like TOP radio, radio Buddu among others were allowed to operate because they paid their electricity bills and others have entered into agreements with UBC.

Acting managing director of UBC, Paul Kihika says that UBC doesn’t have any problem with radio stations that meet all necessary requirements.

Police has detained 23 employees of National Housing Corporation for allegedly torturing and causing death of one person.

National Housing Corporation is currently involved in a land dispute with local residents of Namungona over proper land ownership.

Ibin Senkumbi the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson says the employees illegally arrested and locked up Isaac Lubega and Godfrey Kasekende in their offices.

They later beat them up and severely injured the duo accusing them of inciting residents not to vacate the land.

Lubega later died on arrival at Mulago hospital while Kasekende is still undergoing treatment for injuries sustained. Another resident Isaac Nsubuga was reportedly shot on the head by a guard of the same company.

Senkumbi says investigations into the incident are still going on.

It seems the ruling government is punishing FDC leaders for opposing it from left to right. After detaining the FDC president, Col. Kiiiza Besigye at his home in Kasangati, we have been told that the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and UMEME have disconnected FDC offices in Najjanankumbi on Kampala Entebbe.

A source on FDC National Executive Committee has told us that UMEME has disconnected them over a debt of 600,000 Uganda shillings while NWSC cut off the service over a debt of only 200,000 shillings.

We are told that FDC officials abused the UMEME and NWSC staffs of being used by the government to disconnect them because the workers of these different companies arrived at the same time.

However we have heard that the FDC leaders have resolved to clear all their water and electricity arrears by tomorrow because today their accountant was out of office.

A source on FDC National Executive Committee has told us that UMEME has disconnected them over a debt of 600,000 Uganda shillings while NWSC cut off the service over a debt of only 200,000 shillings.

Remember many government departments including police, prisons and the army owe UMEME alone more than 32 billion shillings in unpaid arrears.
