WCC invites  Youth Internship Programme in Geneva

WCC Youth Internship Programme: The World Council of Churches welcomes young people (aged 18-30 years) to serve as interns in its Geneva offices.

Interns work in a World Council of Churches (WCC) programme for a one-year period. During this time, they gain work experience in an ecumenical field and are given the tools to take this back to the local level.

The second emphasis of the internship programme is on ecumenical formation and community-building: as a group, the interns learn how to work in a multicultural and multiconfessional environment.

Each intern also develops an ecumenical project to be implemented back in their home contexts.

By providing young people with a rich international experience of community-building, team work and ecumenical learning, this activity strengthens both local churches and the ecumenical movement as a whole.

World Council of Churches (WCC) looks for Interns who are committed to the ideals of the ecumenical movement, to bring their energy, commitment and fresh vision to a specific work assignment.

ICMR International Fellowship Programme: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is the premier national agency for the formulation, promotion and conduct of biomedical research in India.

The mandate and policies of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) coincide with national health policies.

The Council not only plans and promotes medical research in the current and emerging health problems of the country but also is expected to build a strong national cadre of skilled biomedical scientists.

One of the major mandates of the Council is to augment capacity strengthening of institutions involved in both basic and clinical sciences.

The world is now witnessing a rapid change in the way biomedical research is conducted.

The developing countries are in the grip of formidable challenges posed by the existing communicable diseases coupled with new emerging infections.

There is an urgent need that researchers working in the core health sectors like diagnostics, epidemiology, surveillance and cure are exposed to the latest advancements in knowledge and interact with International scientists in their respective field of work.

Considering that India has attained excellence and leadership amongst the developing countries in several areas of research especially in tropical and communicable diseases in the field of epidemiology/surveillance/diagnosis, it becomes imperative that India should take a lead in sharing and offering opportunities to scientists from developing countries to come and work in Indian institutes/laboratories.

To achieve this objective and for better south to south cooperation, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has embarked upon international fellowships for capacity building and human resource development programme for biomedical scientists working in developing countries.

Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Scholarships: The Council of Sidney Sussex College offers annually, for men and women of any nationality, a number of Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Studentships for research or advanced courses in Law or cognate subjects in the University of Cambridge.

The Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Studentships, which are subject to reviews of diligence and progress, are tenable for one year in the first instance but may be renewed annually, up to a maximum of three years.

Their value depends on the candidate’s needs in the light of support from other sources and on the availability of income from the Evan Lewis Thomas Fund.

Under the terms of the will of the late Judge Evan Lewis-Thomas, candidates must have shown proficiency in Law and Jurisprudence, normally by obtaining a university degree in Law, and they must be or become candidates for the Ph.D. Degree, the Diploma in Legal Studies, the Diploma in International Law, the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) in Criminology, or the LL.M Degree.

Law Scholarship

If candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, elections will next be made to up to five Studentships (of between £1,000 and £3,000 per annum, reduced to £1,000 if full funding is obtained from another source).

Election to a Studentship may be made conditional upon satisfactory results in degree examinations and is in all cases conditional upon the person elected being accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies if he/she is a candidate for the Ph.D. Degree, the M.Phil. Degree or a Diploma, or by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Law if he/she is a candidate for the LL.M. Degree.

In politics every person is important. Makerere University councilor Bernard Luyiga is now full of smiles after the president general of the Democratic Party (DP) Norbert Mao appointed his party’s special envoy in charge of universities.

Luyiga formerly a member of DP made an alliance with NRM councilors at Kampala City Council in a bid to become the deputy Lord Mayor. His actions politically shifted him from DP to NRM, at least in the eyes of political analysts.

Luyiga even went ahead and acquired police body guards. The people who may have queries’ on this issue (of gun) should ask Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. But Luyiga’s critics have been baffled after Mao appointed him the DP envoy in charge of Universities. Luyiga we hear has already accepted the appointment. Luyiga however denies reports that he crossed to NRM. He says it is only Lukwago’s questionable leadership in Kampala what makes him (Luyiga) to support NRM plots against Lukwago.

The Members of Parliament on the committee of Presidential Affairs are probing into the bickering at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the bribery cited in job allocation.

The MPs have planned to investigate the bickering and corruption at KCCA within only two weeks and then give a report of their findings to the speaker of parliament.

The MPs are probing activities of the KCCA after the staff of the defunct Kampala City Council cried out to Parliament for help, accusing KCCA, of sidelining them in favour of new workers.

The committee investigating KCCA is being chaired by Bernabas Tinkasimire (NRM). Tinkansimire says his committee will give recommendations on how the city management should be streamlined after its investigations.

It seems the rivals of Mufti Shaban Mubajje will develop ulcers and high blood pressure when they read this shocking information. The spokesman of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Nsereko Mutumba says that Mufti Mubajje will leave office in 2025.

He told news informers that the elections Uganda Muslim Supreme Council is organising next month are to elect Muslim organs in Uganda but they are not to elect a new Mufti.

There are two parallel Muslim leadership structures in Uganda. One led by Mubajje and another by Sheikh Zubair Kayongo. Mubajje is 57 years old. Hajji Nsereko Mutumba says that Mubajje would leave office when he is 70 years.

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council general elections will run from March 26th to May 3rd this year.
