Address climate change issues equally across communities – Environmentalists

Environmentalists have asked government to consider closing the widening policy gap between the communities to drastically address issues of climate change. Disseminating findings of disaster risks in Uganda carried out from the five districts of Kasese, Katakwi, Kabale, Kawempe and Mbale, the programme officer DENIVA Uganda, Anne Akwango and Reuben Mbawuta state that 80% of the populations in these areas confirm having received large scale disasters in the last one year with 40% having experienced large scale disasters in the past 10 years which leave behind adverse effects as many crops, animals, human lives and property is lost leaving the population wondering and in a state of misery.

The environmentalists now maintain that though there are existing policies on climate change, they are not bringing out the reality that can expeditiously cause change in these communities as a way of mitigating climate change as well as the disasters that put the lives of citizens at risk. Meanwhile, the experts are now calling for proper implementation of laws if the communities are to overcome such disasters across the country.

Minister reveals that there is no relief food in the nation

The disaster preparedness and Refugee stores have run out of food for relief food. This has been revealed by the Minister of disaster preparedness and Refugees, Engineer Hilary Onek, while appearing before the Human Rights committee of parliament chaired by woman MP for Mitoma district.

Onek said that for the last five months disaster preparedness stores have been empty. He said that there is no food in stores and have written to the Minister of Finance over the matter with no response. The minister also expressed concern over the poor quality of roads constructed and wondered the kind of engineers the country have these days. He said that roads are washed away by rains because they are poorly constructed.

11 pregnant women buried live in eastern Uganda

Tears and shock engulfed the people of Bududa district in eastern Uganda after 11 pregnant women were buried live by the mudslides. The ministry for disaster preparedness confirms that 28 people were buried live including the 11 pregnant women.

The relief and disaster preparedness minister Steven Mallinga says his ministry is about to get more facts about the number of people who were buried by the soils on Monday.
The survivors of the mudslides are currently sleeping under trees but the line government ministry has provided them with tents, jerrycans and food.

Although the minister says that 28 people died in the incidence, the Uganda Red Cross Secretary Michael Nataka, says that over 72 people are still missing. All the victims of the mudslides were from four villages in Bulucheke sub-county in Bududa district.

MTN Marathon run to provide clean water to Amuria

Flagging off MTN Marathon at MTN Arena Lugogo

Residents of Wiila Sub County in the eastern district of Amuria are arriving in Kampala to take part in the ninth edition of the Annual MTN Kampala Marathon, slated for Sunday November 27, 2011, setting off from the Kololo Airstrip.

The exercise under the theme ‘What’s Your Reason To Run?’ is expected to attract over 20,000 people who will raise up to 230 million shillings.

MTN says the money will be handed over to water Aid to execute water projects around the country, particularly in Amuria where vulnerable people have no access to clean and safe drinking water.

Area mp who is also state minister in charge of relief and disaster preparedness Musa Echweru says the project will help keep children in school as many of them have been missing class because they had to fetch water for their parents.

Ecweru wants those on Mt. Rwenzori slopes to relocate

The minister for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru has directed the people living in the steep hills of Mt Rwenzori to relocate to area that are relatively safe.

Ecweru says the environmental degradation has inflicted on the environment across the country citing landsides, hailstorms and lightening among other dangers people on mountains are prone to.

He says that it will be easy for government to look after people when they are displaced somewhere else but not dead.

Experts say that the trees that used to control lightening have all been harvested and that when there are storms lightening finds itself going through human beings and sometimes animals.
