Sickle cellHealth experts and educationists in Uganda have raised serious concerns over the faster rate at which sickle cell disease is growing in the country but with great fear that little has been done by the ministry to have a lasting solution to the burden leaving 80% of the newborns dying before they make their fifth birthday.
Professor Christopher Nduguwa and Charles Kiyaga reveal that according to the simple nationwide survey carried out by the ministry with support from America in 2014, it was found out that Uganda gives birth to 15,000 to 20,000 kids with the sickle cells disease and this accounts for 47% of the disease burden in the whole country. They still reveal that Northern Uganda has the highest numbers followed by eastern Uganda and then central with the district of Kampala, Gulu, Namutumba, Iganga, Lira, Tororo, Jinja, Mayuge, Luuka, Apac, Buikwe, Masaka, Oyam, Soroti having the greatest numbers of the disease.
However, the experts are now calling for thorough study to have better data and set up health centers or units to handle the disease across the country since in rural areas its not noticed due to lack of better health facilities to diagnose the disease.
Prof. Ndugwa also down plays the myth that sicklers don’t live longer and he says that they do live longer just like other normal human beings but with maximum treatment adherence.

Shingles (read herpes zoster): It is a painful condition caused by herpes zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once you had a chickenpox (and many adults have had the disease at the same point in their lives), the virus doesn’t leave your body.

Instead it takes up residence in the nerves near the spine, where it lies dormant, usually for the rest of your life. Sometimes however, herpes zoster is triggered back into activity.

The disease is caused by herpes zoster virus and weakened immune system. The Longman’s dictionary defines shingles as “Shingles is a disease caused by an infection of certain nerves and producing pain red spots often in a band around the waist.” The disease can be treated but it is fatal when neglected. In Uganda, records in the ministry of health indicate that the disease kills over 178 people in a year.

Antiviral medicines like tamiflu, and other supportive treatment that can effectively treat the illness are available in the ministry of health in the case of Uganda. You also need to drink a lot of fruits and have enough time to rest.

Influenza is a respiratory disease that is caused by influenza virus that is related to a virus that regularly causes diseases in pigs. The spread of influenza can be stopped under the following ways:

Always sneeze or cough into a handkerchief or tissues. The minister for health in Uganda government Christine Androa says the disease can be stopped by people washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after touching the mouth and nose or surfaces that are potentially contaminated.

The minister, while speaking in an interview urged people to reduce the time they spend in crowded places whenever they hear that there is an outbreak of influenza in any part of the world.

It is also advised to improve air flow in your houses/homes by opening windows. Further more it is advised to avoid close contact with people who show influenza like symptoms (try to maintain a distance of about one meter if possible).

The world a couple of years ago experienced a new influenza disease outbreak which was reported in more than 40 countries around the world and claimed over 95 human lives.

According to doctors and other medical experts, Influenza is a respiratory disease that is caused by influenza virus that is related to a virus that regularly causes diseases in pigs.

When people infected with influenza cough or sneeze, infected droplets get on their hands, drop on the surface or are dispersed into the air.

Therefore another person can breathe in contaminated air or touch infected hands or surfaces and get exposed to influenza disease. Doctor David Ddumba of Nsambya hospital, formerly a worker at Mulago hospital (Uganda), says that to prevent the spread of influenza, people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue whenever coughing, and wash their hands frequently.

Well you may be at risk of suffering from heart disease(s) if you have a family member or parent who has developed a heart attack or stroke at an early age.

But genetics is no longer the primary determinant for cardiovascular disease. Learned lifestyle, school exercise, diet and stress management have been found to play significant role in the development of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity.

Even if your mother or father had heart disease, you can still make personal lifestyle improvement that reduces your risk significantly. Its better also to note that blood pressure is controlled by flexibility and overall side of the blood vessels.

Inflammation and excess cholesterol reduce the flow of blood, which ultimately increases the pressure within the blood vessel. When the pressure increases your heart must work harder to pump blood through the smaller space and wherever the blood is travelling to (for example; arms, toes, brain etc) will suffer.

Today we are privileged to bring to you the connection between high blood pressure and heart disease: Doctors from Mulago Hospital say that blood pressure is controlled by flexibility and overall side of the blood vessels.

Inflammation and excess cholesterol reduce the flow of blood, which ultimately increases the pressure within the blood vessel. When the pressure increases your heart must work harder to pump blood through the smaller space and wherever the blood is travelling to (for example; arms, toes, brain etc) will suffer.

Blood carries vital nutrients and oxygen to tissues throughout the body. The diminished blood flow ultimately affects the ability to heal over time, the tissues deteriorate.

Heart disease develops as a result of people having poor diet. People across the globe look and they are what they eat. Every choice we make in our eating habits will impact us one day. Our diet plays a significant role in prevention or production of heart diseases. Diets high in artificial processed fats, low in fresh vegetables and fruit, and high in alcohol put people at the greatest risk of heart disease.

In order to help your blood pressure under control and therefore lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, limit the amount of salt you consume. As much as 75% of the salt in the average diet comes from processed foods-everything from bacon to soups and salad dressing. Choose foods without added salt and prepare home-cooked food with little or no salt. All natural food items such as fruits vegetables, fish and lean meats have very little salt.

Is heart disease linked to age or gender? The answer is YES. The person’s risk of developing a heart attack increases significantly with age.

Studies indicate that more than 80% of the people who die of heart disease are 60 years of age or older.

Men have a greater risk of developing a heart attack earlier in life, while women are more susceptible to heart attack after menopause due to diminished levels of oestrogen.

Oestrogen is known to raise good HDL cholesterol, thus protecting a woman early in life. However the positive effects of oestrogen are negated if a woman is overweight, suffers from diabetes or has elevated cholesterol.

Also diet plays a part in the development of heart diseases. Every choice people (we) make today will impact them the next day, week, months, years or decades to come tomorrow. Our diet plays a significant role in prevention or production of heart diseases. Diets high in artificial processed fats, low in fresh vegetables and fruit, and high in alcohol put people at the greatest risk of heart disease.

Smoke contains chemicals that damage the lining of the blood vessels, producing inflammation and increasing fatty deposits in the arteries.

Ingredients like nicotine raise blood pressure, increase heart rate and also reduce oxygen flow to the tissues, according to medical research findings at Mulago hospital.

Smoking is a destructive lifestyle choice that doctors and other medical experts say that is highly addictive. Smoking and heart diseases have been linked to weight gain, weight-loss resistance, physical inactivity and excessive stress on the body.

Deaths resulting from cardiovascular disease could also be greatly reduced by simply eliminating smoking. The ministry of health also put a warning on all packets of cigarettes that ‘smoking is deadly.’
