There are two major types of cancerous brain tumours. There is Medullo blastoma, which Dr. Richard Idro, a neuro paediatrician at Mulago Hospital in Kampala says it develops at the back of the person’s brain and it may spread to other parts of the brain. The second type of cancerous brain tumours is ‘gliomas’, which Dr. Michael Muhumuza, a neuro-surgeon at Mulago Hospital says it develops from the supporting cells of the brain known as glial cells.
Dr. Michael Muhumuza says the symptoms, dangers and signs of cancerous brain tumours depend on the location and how it affects the brain.

Doctors define brain as a bonny cage with fixed amount of space. When a tumour develops in the brain, it compresses the brain, causing pressure in it. The increased pressure on the brain causes constant headaches, vomiting, seizures, vision problems and speech problems depending on where the tumour is located on the brain.  One needs a brain magnetic scan or resonance image scan to get a picture of a cancerous brain tumour. Treatment of cancerous brain tumours: cancerous brain tumours in most cases are treated using surgery.

Masaka national referral hospital has reportedly tortured out patients over identity cards. Dozens of patients in Masaka were on Wednesday this week left stranded at the gate of Masaka Regional Referral Hospital after they were denied entry because of lack of identification.

The development came after new guidelines announced by the hospital’s director, one Dr. Florence Tugumisirize, that require out patients and their attendants to present identification or letters from the local councils before they are allowed into the hospital.

Dr. Tugumisirize says that the move is intended to deter “wrong elements” who want to sneak into the hospital to cause chaos.

The doctor claims that the hospital received information that Muhammad Ssegirinya, an opposition activist, had mobilised “political thugs” to enter the hospital disguising as patients and launch a protest in the hospital.

But the Police restrained several patients and their attendants who were blocked from entering the hospital for lack of identification. Some of the people who were attending to their sick relatives cried after they were blocked by the police from entering the hospital after exiting to buy food. The health minister, Christine Andoa says that there is no policy requiring patients to carry LC letters and identity cards to hospital.

Food poisoning is an acute intestinal illness that results from eating food that contains harmful chemicals some of which are bacterial and others viral.

Our food can be contaminated at any stage, be it harvesting, production, processing, storage and or cooking, as Dr. George Wamuyu, the Child Health and Nutrition adviser at the Regional Centre for Quality Health Care says. Dr. Wamuyu says that food poisoning may come as a result of under-cooked meat, eating raw vegetables, taking unboiled water, and or non-pasteurised milk.

Even if one cooks the food properly, food poisoning may occur if the food is placed on dirty utensils or cutting boards. Note that all foods contain bacteria. Even food itself may produce high levels of poisonous chemicals that trigger food poisoning.

The Symptoms of food poisoning depend on the type of toxins. These include nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Children, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases are prone to food poisoning. The condition can be treated, according to Dr. Wamuyu, by antibiotics, and it is advisable to avoid dairy products  when suffering from food poisoning.

Former president of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye has condemned the manner in which the retired former assistant Bishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr. Zac Niringiye and eight other clergies were arrested on Monday by the Police.

The Police in Kampala arrested and detained nine anti-corruption activists (clergies) of the Black Monday group including Bishop Niringiye. The group which was arrested at Makerere University was later released on police bond pending investigations.

But Besigye says that the way the Bishop and his cohorts were arrested was too brutal and inhuman. “How could police pull the Bishop as if they were arresting a terrorist?” Besigye wonders.

The Bishop was arrested for allegedly distributing anti-corruption leaflets which the police say was containing false and subversive language.

However, Besigye says that the Bishop was only giving out leaflets to whoever wanted and his message was not in anyway brutal.

Dr. Frank Sebowa, New Executive Director of UIA

Concerns have been raised over environmental degradation especially on wetlands by investors accredited by the Investment Authority.

Addressing his first news conference as Dr. Sebbowa has explained that the land is legally allocated to the investors but surprisingly some tend to expand into wetlands violating guidelines.

Sebowa says that this is one of the issues that he hopes to tackle immediately as he settles in his new office.

Sr. Sebowa’s appointment brings to an end a 15 month search for the agency’s new executive director.

He replaces Dr. Maggie Kigozi who left in June last year.

Many people in Uganda are living with chronic hepatitis B infection, an infection that causes liver cancer according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Country advisor Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) surveillance, Dr. Innocent Mwesigye.

He says that Northern Uganda has the highest cases of chronic hepatitis B infection with over 25% of the population infected. Western Uganda registers about 7% cases of chronic hepatitis B infection.

Doctors tell us that the chronic hepatitis B infection virus reproduces in liver cells.

However the chronic hepatitis B infection virus itself is not the direct cause of damage to the liver. According to Dr. Mwesigye, hepatitis B is transmitted through sexual intercourse, illicit drug use and exposure to infected blood among other factors. The spread of the virus can be prevented through immunization.

The ministry of health and other health partners are vaccinating health providers against hepatitis B as one of the preventive measures to avoid contracting the virus due to blood contact with hepatitis B patients.
