The outgoing vice president professor Gilbert Bukenya has expressed concern over the withdraw of government buses which had been given to him to support the small scale skill transfer project he started in Kakiri Wakiso district.

Former Uganda President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya

Professor Bukenya argues that the two buses were helping transport the youth being trained in the various skills development including textile, craft and small scale farming among others.

Bukenya now says he was disappointed and removed from the cabinet and the buses have since been taken away from him and are just parked at Okello which has halted the activities of the project.

He now appeals to the new vice president Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi to help ensure the buses are returned to ensure the continuation of the project. Professor Bukenya officially handed over office to the new vice president Sekandi on Wednesday.

Former vice president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has today handed over his former office to the newly appointed vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi amid tears from his former employees at state house.

Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi

Handing over the office at cabinet library, Bukenya welcomed Ssekandi whom he says is his former school mate where he was in S.2 while Ssekandi was in S.6, saying since he the junior (Bukenya) has done something, the senior Ssekandi will do more.

He took Ssekandi through the role of his office and the kind of work he has done and that still on table, among which included the Upland rice project, poverty alleviation and his skills’ development project which was still ongoing at the time of his disappointment.

He says the Upland rice project started as a joke with journalists baptizing him Rice vice president, saying this project has performed well and has enabled Uganda save over US$90m annually from non-importation of rice.

However, despite his progress in these projects, Bukenya was angry with a decision by state house to remove vehicles that he was using in the skills’ development project and therefore urged the incoming VP to ensure that this program continues.

Meanwhile, his exit was punctuated with lots of tears from among his former employees who said they used to enjoy his love, care, hard work and guidance from Bukenya and therefore pledged to always consult him on any matters as need may arise for further guidance.

In another development, Ssekandi declined to take questions from scribes, saying he needed more time to study the handover report by Bukenya, but he said his coming is not meant to destroy and build, but to sustain and add on the already initiated programs.

The Speaker of Parliament Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi announced to MPs, in an emotional sitting, the end of the term of the Eighth parliament urging MPs to appreciate and embrace the multiparty political system.

He says that people should stop comparing the seventh parliament to the eighth parliament, since the 8th Parliament was more challenging because it was the first under a multiparty political system.

Sekandi says that Mps on the government side came with one manifesto that the executive is trying to implement, but many wanted to debate like independents. He says that no one change the way business is being run in parliament unless the constitution is amended and Uganda returns to the no party movement system.

Speaker Ssekandi announced that the official proclamation for the end of the Eighth Parliament had already been signed and would be gazetted on May 18, the day the ninth Parliament would commence.
