A retreat for members of the National Consultative Forum for Political Parties being held at Lake Victoria Serena hotel will close on Wednesday this week.

The retreat which attracted representatives from the Democratic Party, Forum for Democratic Change, Justice Forum, National Resistance Movement, Uganda Peoples Congress and the Conservative Party kicked off on Monday March 5th. The secretary general of NRM Amama Mbabazi says that the retreat will end on Wednesday morning. We have heard that the participants in this meeting will each receive 500,000 thousand as sitting allowance.

The retreat has been held under the theme “The role of the National Consultative Forum in supporting political parties copes with challenges in a growing democracy: The Uganda case.”

The retreat has featured presentations and discussions by political party leaders, officials from the South African and Ghanaian election management bodies, Electoral Commission Uganda, representatives ofMakerereUniversity, and key members of the general public.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is short of about 3 billion shillings to be in position to pay all the field officials that were hired by the Commission in the just concluded voter registration exercise.

There has been a lot of speculation in print, broadcast media, streets and leisure scenes on when the workers would be paid their money amounting to billions of shillings.

The Secretary to the commission, Sam Rwakoojo says their commission regrets the delays which he attributes to the closure of the financial year 2009/2010.

Rwakojo says seven billion shillings has already been cleared for payment adding that the rest will be paid soon.

The Electoral Commission has asked all political parties in Uganda including those on opposition to pay money to access the national voters register.

Uganda Electoral Commission Chairman, Eng. Badru Kiggundu

The chairperson of the commission, Badru Kiggundu has told journalists in Kampala today that political parties will have to pay four million shillings to get permission to print out copies of the National voters register.

The announcement has come at a time when members of the opposition parties especially Forum for Democratic Change and the Democratic Party are pressurizing the commission to give them the list of voters ahead of the 2011 elections.

The Legal Advisor of the Democratic Party, Fred Mukasa Mbidde threatens to sue the commission if the copies of national voters are not issued out for free.
