Julen Lopetegui feels Real Madrid have a player capable of making up much of the creative shortfall left behind by Cristiano Ronaldo‘s departure in James Rodriguez, and Bayern Munich haven’t definitively closed the door on negotiations with Los Blancos.

A two-year loan deal was agreed in the summer of 2017 which took the Colombian play maker to Bavaria, after his time working with Zinedine Zidane proved to be less than pleasing for all involved.

Niko Kovac could have changed matters with the club having been linked with a summer move for Ante Rebic of Frankfurt

With the French coach having departed in June there is a new era beginning at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, one headed by the former Spain coach.

Thus far he has insisted on the return of the former Monaco midfielder, who now believes it will be possible for him to return a year earlier than originally planned. Bayern Munich have shown no appetite to agree to an early exit up to this point, although they haven’t given Los Blancos a concrete rejection.

Rodriguez’s exceptional season with Bayern Munich in 2017/18 left the German champions incredibly pleased with their loan agreement

Relations between the two clubs remain positive off the pitch and there is a feeling in the Spanish capital that this could facilitate the return of the Colombian international before the beginning of the 2018/19 season.

Rodriguez’s exceptional season with Bayern Munich in 2017/18 left the German champions incredibly pleased with their loan agreement.

They don’t wish to lose a player who has become pivotal to their team, although the arrival of Niko Kovac could have changed matters with the club having been linked with a summer move for Ante Rebic of Frankfurt.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure may give James Rodriguez a way in

Real Madrid believe the 27-year-old would like to return now that Zidane has left the club and Lopetegui has instructed the club to do whatever it takes to bring him back.

Bayern’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge understands the will of the player is important, and this is one of the reasons why they haven’t completely closed the option of allowing him to leave.

Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo face a decisive week in terms of resolving the Portuguese’s future.

Other than an unexpected turn of events, the striker will move to Turin after nine years at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Both parties expect that steps will be taken throughout the week so that Ronaldo’s historic transfer to Juventus can be completed.

The first is for Juve to put the 100 million euro offer on the table, and they will do it because they have been given the player’s word that he will sign for the Italian champions.

Madrid have been saying for some time that they have had no offer, but it will be the definitive step for the operation to move forwards.

There is still no agreement between Los Blancos and the player when it comes to deciding on the way in which the goodbye will take place either.

Madrid want Ronaldo to make clear that it is he who wants to leave, and that he is the one who wants Real to accept.

Under these conditions, the club will fulfill its part of the deal to accept the 100 million euros.

If he doesn’t, then Florentino Perez will ensure that the original buyout clause of 1 bn euros remains in place.

Legacy

Beyond the agreed departure, Madrid would also like to stage something to show the legacy that Ronaldo leaves behind.

Avoiding situations like Iker Casillas or Raul in the past is paramount.

This is where some friction may arise because Cristiano’s position is, at present, far removed from what the club proposes in the sense of how the exit should take place.

The player remains firm in his position that it is Madrid that have forced this situation, because his desire was to retire there.

It’s that situation that is the one that has caused finally the total rupture between club and player.

However, the player’s advisors believe that, eventually, he will accept a way out that is good for both parties and that, somehow, does not stain everything worked for over the nine years he has been at the club.

In short, all good things come to an end.
