As Uganda today joins the world to mark the International day against Female Genital Mutilation, female legislators are concerned that the practice continues despite the existence of the law.

Speaking to journalists, Mps including Florence Ibi, Sylvia Namabidde, Florence Namayanja and Grace Namara say there is need for more combined effort in creating more awareness about the law.

They also want a deliberate sensitization program by the ministry of gender against the vice among other things as they elaborate.

Uganda has taken vital steps in stopping Female Genital Mutilation also known as female circumcision, a cultural practice in some communities.

The country joins the rest of the world to mark the day against Female Genital Mutilation on Wednsday.

The day that is meant to promote zero tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, is marked every 6th of February and in Uganda it has been marked since 2003.

According to the State Minister for Culture Rukia Nakadama, an estimated 120-140 million women are subjected to the brutal practice, risking the lives of 3 million girls in Africa every year.

She says the Global theme for tomorrow’s function is; Translate Resolutions to Intensify Global Efforts for elimination of FGM.

The national celebrations will run under the theme; Intensifying Efforts to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation. Celebrations are to be held in Moroto district- one of the areas where the practice is most common.

The appeal was launched by the international non government organisational No Peace without Justice, the inter African committee on tradition practices affecting the health of women and children and the European network for prevention and eradication of harmful traditional practices.

The declaration calls upon the united nation general assembly to ban female genital mutilation worldwide and setup universal condemnation of this act of human rights violation.

The organisations are citing concerns that the continued practice of FGM or female circumcision endangers many girls and women across the world.

The appeal indicates the UN resolution would contribute greatly to the global change in the perception of female genital mutilation as a clear human rights violation against million women around the world.

Uganda this passed a law banning Female genital mutilation and the constitutional court of Uganda also ruled that the practice of FGM is unconstitutional since it abuses rights of women and girls.
