It is every parent’s dream to know that their children are safe and sound wherever they are, and news of a school fire can be very devastating.  In 2019, Uganda registered a total of 12 school fires across the country with 10 occurring in the Central region alone. Let’s break down these scenarios in order of occurrence.

Boys’ dormitory at Namirembe Hillside High School goes up in flames

February

18th February – Fire burnt a dormitory at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Primary School in Nakasongola District, destroying property worth millions. According to the school head teacher, Ms. Allen Musoke, by the time the dormitory caught fire, the pupils had gone for morning lessons at about 5: 30 am and no one was injured. The dormitory was housing boys in Primary Five, Six and Seven.

20th February – Fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at Najjanankumbi City Academy in Makindye Division in Kampala, destroying lots of property including books, suitcases, utensils and beddings.

21st February – Fire gutted a dormitory at St Jude Primary School in Nakasongola District and claimed the life of Favor Itaro, a Primary One pupil. Itaro died of suffocation, according to a postmortem report released by police. Seven pupils were injured. District authorities closed the school for one week. The ill-fated dormitory had burglar proof windows, which could have made it difficult for the pupils to escape the fire.

24th February – A boys’ dormitory at Sembabule Parents Primary School was destroyed by fire when pupils were attending evening classes. The affected dormitory was housing 35 boys and a lot of property was lost.

28th February – Another fire gutted St. Anthony Roman Catholic Primary School in just a space of 11 days, leading to its closure. The Thursday fire destroyed the girls’ dormitory housing over 18 pupils.

March

20th March – Fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at St James Secondary School in Mubende District, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

April

4th April – Property worth Shs800 million was destroyed in a dormitory fire at Forest Hill College Mukono (State minister for higher education JC Muyingo’s school). The boys’ dormitory was housing at least 225 students of senior three to senior six. Authorities say no one was hurt by the fire that destroyed students’ mattresses, books, jerrycans, clothes and money, among others.

May

27th May – Fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at Kisoso Parents Primary School, a day after pupils reported for second term, destroying some property including suit cases which involved pupils’ belongings and beddings. According to the Southern Police spokesman Paul Kangave, the incident happened at around 7:30pm on Monday. It is suspected that the fire could have been a result of a wrongly installed solar panel system at the dormitory, according to Charles Nsereko, the school director.

Mr. Kangave said the dormitory accommodates about 160 pupils, but by the time of the incident, only 60 had reported and none were injured.

July

20th July – Fourteen students were injured in Nakaloke Islamic School in Mbale District after a fire suspected to have started from one of the dormitories near the mosque reduced properties to ashes before it was contained by the Police Fire Brigade. Textbooks, classroom work, mattresses, case boxes, clothing and utensils, belonging to 50 students were all destroyed.

25th July – students of Namirembe Hillside High School in Kitetika, Wakiso District lost property worth millions of shillings after a fire gutted one of their dormitories.

Property worth Shs800m destroyed in a dormitory fire at Forest Hill College Mukono

September

18th September – Pupils of Happy Times SS, Masajja in Wakiso District lost a lot of property when fire gutted one of the dormitories.

21st September – Just three days later, another fire gutted a dormitory at Kyotera Infant and Primary School. The fire started at the door of the boys’ dormitory and quickly spread to the rest of the facility. No lives were lost but pupils’ belongings such as mattresses, shoes, suit cases, clothes and books were burnt to ashes.

Caution is needed

This alarming rate of fire outbreaks calls for more caution from school authorities to always ensure that they have working firefighting equipment, and that learners have the knowledge of how to operate it.

Fuel trucks in Uganda have history of catching fire. When you Google Uganda fuel trucks catching fine, you will not fail to get news that fuel trucks caught fire in Jinja, Kampala, Jinja road, Mukono and Masaka road…

For example a Kampala-bound fuel truck on Friday morning caught fire after it lost control and rammed into a house at Kitega in Lugazi, still on Kampala Jinja road. Several people were injured and one person was confirmed dead.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Sekeba, who was a security operative at attached at Special Investigation Unit in Kireka but he was camouflaging as a boda boda cyclist.

Transport experts in Uganda told us that Uganda has history of fuel trucks accidents because of poor roads network in Uganda. The donors have tried a lot to construct roads for this country but due to corruption in Uganda government, much of the money is miss used by government officials leading to doing shoddy work.

Police is to consider offering security for the different Buganda institutions for safety.

Kampala metropolitan commandant Andrew Felix Kaweesi says that the security of the Kabaka lies in the hands of the army but the police can come in if given the chance.

He however says that this will only be done in case the kingdom accepts it.

This comes after a mysterious fire gutted one of the kingdom’s guard rooms at Bulange Mengo this morning.

One person died on spot and four others were injured by the fire.

The injured include Captain Steven Mivule and one Sebuguzi who have been rushed to Mengo hospital.

The police have identified the dead person as a mentally ill woman who was earlier arrested as she tried to enter the kingdom premises.

Earlier, the police spokesman Kampala Metropolitan Ibin Ssenkumbi said investigations had begun and they had already taken samples from the scene of the fire.

He also reveals that some of the samples include petrol-like substances

Senkumbi now calls for clam as investigations continue.

This is the second fire this year on Buganda kingdom properties.

Earlier, another fire gutted a house at the kingdom’s coronation site at Naggalabi.

Even though the UPDF spokesperson, Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye argues that the said planes were not gunned down but just had a hard landing due to whether, sources in military have it that the Al Shabaab intelligence very much followed the movement of the planes and they had to stop them before thus resulting into the said shooting down of the three Uganda Russian made war airplanes.
This is very much evident because it was only jet fighters which were gunned down and the so called cargo carrier reached the destined point inMogadishu.

One of the Kabaka of Buganda’s shrines, called BWANIKA -NAGALABI BUGANDA HOUSE was touched to ashes last night on, 7/08/2012 by unidentified persons.

Bwanika -Nagalabi House is where KABAKA OF BUGANDA Traditional Coronation Rituals are carried out. Like the BURNING OF KASUBI royal TOMBS, also Bwanika -Nagalabi House was deliberately torched to hurt and destroy Buganda’s Historical Cultural Sites.

The mysterious fire burnt Bwanika House on Naggalabi hill in Wakiso district when every body at the shrine was asleep.

Naggalabi is the official coronation site for Buganda Kings, while Bwanika is where the Crown Prince performs the final rituals before ascending to the throne. It is here that Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi was crowned in July 1993.

Charles Peter Mayiga, the Buganda Kingdom spokesperson, confirmed the fire, but declined to give details.

Wails, panic, and confusion sweeps Ugandans almost every month as suspected arsonists set fire on schools properties worth million of shillings including children’s lives perish.

The incidents and causes of schools fires puzzle the Police, NGO’s and all the people of Uganda at large up to this moment.  A total of over 50 pupils have succumbed to school fires since Feb 2010.

Under the circumstances it is a miracle that several children, who are being housed in the burnt schools and dormitories, survive the inferno. As the fire flames rages through the school buildings, several pupils and students try to scamper for safety. But not all of them manage to escape, so they get burnt to death in the process. The fire breaks school buildings when the school administrators and the children are unaware. Some of the school administrators told our informers that many times fire break out at a time when they are asleep, and there are no neighbours to quickly come to their rescue.

The Inspector General of Police Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura says that police detectives have followed various clues and their investigations have yielded some important information.

The police files indicate that the school fires are now rampant in the country because some of the school administrators and teachers fail to supervise the schools well and the police fire brigade department responds to the fire late. Some of the schools fences are damaged which makes it possible for intruders to harm the children. The police have also reportedly leant that the rampant land grabbing going on around the country is a result of some of the school fires. It is said that the rich people with big connections in the government use that advantage to grab land from the poor people and as a result the former owners of the land use fire to punish the people who might have grabbed their land. Other sources in Uganda police say that some schools are burnt as a result of jealousy from competing schools and internal wrangles among the schools management.

Kasubi tombs fire report has now leaked to the press. Many groups of people and institutions like Buganda Kingdom have been demanding that the Uganda government releases the report on the Kasubi fire. The fire gutted Kasubi tombs in March 2009.

The report whose details have leaked to the press was completed in March 16, 2011. It was done by the commission which was presided over by Justice Stephen George Engwau and was handed over to the government of Uganda.

The report shows that Kasubi fire was work of an arsonist. It shows that an arm (we have not disclosed in this report) used some people who know Kasubi tombs well to torch it.

The same report also accuses Buganda kingdom of having failed to guard the tombs against the activities of the arsonists. However a source in government has told our informers that the government is not ready to release the report because its findings are too controversial to both Buganda kingdom and the government of Uganda.
