The government of Uganda ’s failure to subsidize power to support power producers has impacted negatively on the businesses of Kampala ’s property mogul, Sudhiru Rupereria.

The information coming from Equatorial Hotel and City house building among others  indicate that many times the premises of the wealthy man can stay without power for very many days.

We hear ‘mbu’ some of the tenants on the big man’s buildings have vowed not to pay him this month because they have not done business. Ronald Senyonjo, one of the administrators of Sudhiru’s buildings explains to us that they have generators but they can not switch them on because its very expensive to do so

Senyonjo says that they have for example four generators at Equatorial hotel. But the whole place is in darkness because they find it expensive to buy fuel. He says that each of the generators at Equatorial Hotel consumes fuel of one million shillings.

Although UMEME has been sending messages on peoples’ phones that the people of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono districts among others are to continue facing frequent outages because the ‘Mutundwe’ power station is under restoration, we have learnt that this information is not true.

An impeccable source at statehouse intimated to us that the agreement which the government made with ‘Agreeko’ Power Company has been permanently cancelled. It is agreeko which has been running Mutundwe power sub station.

A source in state house says that the problem of load shedding will permanently end in January 2012. From January 2012 it will be has hard as a donkey to pass into the hole of a needle for power to get off.

This source tells us that the government cut off agreeko because running its generators was so expensive for the taxpayers. We hear each generator of agreeko would consume nine million shillings in general.

The state minister for energy, Peter Lokeris said that the government is holding negotiations with thermo power generating company Agreko to have the generators switched on to decrease on the rate of load shedding in the country.

Lokeris who also apologized to the nation for the current increased load shedding which has caused losses to people’s business and property says Uganda is to pay180 billion to Agreko if they accept to have the generators back on.

The country has a deficit of 150MW at peak time with current supply capacity of310mw during day to allow commercial and industrial operations but reduces to270mw during evening hence causing a deficit.

Meanwhile, he states that the country will continue experiencing power shortages even when the Bujagali dam is commission later this year or early next year.
