Shock and grief befell on patients as most of Uganda hospitals faces a shortage of tuberculosis drugs, an insider in Uganda’s ministry of health told our news informers today.

The monitoring and evaluation officer with Coalition for Health Promotion and Social Development (HEPS Uganda) also says that the shortage of tuberculosis drugs has lasted for the last four months.

The doctors at Mulago hospital told us that they realise the shortage but there is little they can do about the problem unless the ministry of health and the government comes in.

A source names some of the health centres and hospitals that have run out of tuberculosis drugs as Jinja Hospital, Walukuba health centre IV, Entebbe Hospital, Makerere University Hospital, Mbarara Teaching Hospital, Gulu Regional referral Hospital, Lalogi health centre IV and Nsawo health centre IV among others.

The Executive Director of Gulu Regional Hospital, Dr. Nathan Onyaci confirmed the shortage of tuberculosis drugs in Gulu and said many patients were lacking treatment due to the shortage.

The lead pharmacist in Jinja Hospital, John Kizito also confirms that there has been a delay in the distribution of tuberculosis drugs.

The Ministry of Health’s Permanent Secretary, Asuman Lukwago also confirmed the shortage and added that the National Drug Stores is doing whatever is possible to restock the drugs. Some of the drugs needed in the treatment of TB are Ethambitol, Isoniazial, Rifampicin and Pyranamide.

Last night at about 3:00am a fire fight ensured between UPDF 13 Batallion troops and warriors from Tepeth ethnic group in upper Mathenic Tapac sub county in Kodonyo viollage Moroto district as UPDF carried out a cordon and search operation to recover a gun prior stolen from an LDU in Nakapiripirit and the 6 heads of cattle stolen by the same group.

As the group sensed police and UPDF joint operation into their area by deploying their local dogs which in turn reported the presence of the force, firing at troops started by about six warriors who were together with other civilians in huts.

In the exchange of fire a woman identified as Najagai Murokol was injured on the leg while a 5 year child Nacap Nangiro on the arm. These were later evacuated by UPDF to Moroto barracks health centre for first Aid and latar to Moroto referral hospital for proper treatment.

Some culprits were arrested and 36 heads of cattle impounded waiting for proper identification and handing over to rightful owners.

This is one of the few incidences that have only remained synonymous to the Tepeth community who stay on the tip and slopes of mountain Moroto. This group should stay warned that UPDF will continue disarmament and carrying out preventive and abrupt strikes to recover any illegal gun within their hands. Other tribes have been lagely disarmed but a few of the Tepeth community members have always used the terrain advantage to hide some guns in the mountains. UPDF is an agile force that can operate in any environment and thus the Tepeth local leaders and elders should advise their members to hand in the remaining few guns and desist from provoking other tribes by stealing their animals. Otherwise such operations will continue and we give a final blow to lawlessness in Karamoja.

Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially commissioned a health centre III at Moruita in Nakapiripirit district, in southern part of Karamoja sub region.

The CDF General Aronda Nyakairima who was the chief guest today opened a health centre III in Moruita in Nakapiripirit district amidst ululations from the locals.

The health centre which he insisted should be called 407 Brigade Health centre III to avoid being grabbed by district authorities is located at the new home of the UPDF 407 Brigade headquarters in Moruita.

The construction of this centre started on the 27th of Jan 2009 by the UPDF Engineers Brigade when Gen Aronda laid the foundation and promised to complete it.

The well furnished centre has a theatre, Laboratory, two wards for male and female, Doctors room, councilor’s room and other apartments.

In his speech, General Aronda promised that the centre will be fully equipped and open to both the army and the public but ran sort of appointing a military Doctor instead handed over the facility to the District health officer Nakapiripirit to over see it until a military Doctor is Identified. He also promised that UPDF will stay in Karamoja until peace, security and development are irreversible.

Speaker after speaker hailed the UPDF for the work the army has done for the local communities in the area pouring prizes to the local commander there Lt Col Moses Kwikiriza as the best commander ever and they demanded that Aronda promotes him in recognition of his good working relationship with wanainch but Aronda later in his speech insisted that with or without promotion Lt col kwikiriza will have to continue serving the people of Karamoja diligently. He added that UPDF is just playing a supplementary role in fulfilling the president’s pledge of improving NAADS and Health.

He reminded the people of Karamoja that the development of Karamoja was the 8th point on the 10 point program of NRA and therefore no body can stop it. That the few remaining stubborn warriors and their acts will soon be history and the people of Amudat and Nakapiripirit being near the Kenyan boarder should begin to trade with neighboring Kenya like it is the case with Gulu and South Sudan after attaining peace.

The Commander of the Engineers Brigade in UPDF announced that Moruita Health centre was the 19th constructed by his Brigade in the whole country and promised to build more.

The Chairperson LC 5 Nakapiripirit Mr John Lorot in his remarks promised to support the health centre and UPDF in its final assault on lawlessness in Karamoja while the District Health officer promised to reduce child and mother mortality using the facility.

Others who attended included the Local government leaders of the districts of Amudat and Nakapiripirit, RDCs, area councilors and the local citizens.
