The Executive Director of the board, Michael Wanyama, while appearing before the education committee to defend their budget noted that in the next financial year they planned on admitting 3,000 students to benefit from the loan scheme but only 4.34 billion shillings has been allocated in the budget leaving a balance of 8 billion.

Wanyama also said that every year they receive applications of about 5,000 students who want to join universities but they are only able to accommodate around 1,000 students and says this number needs to be increased.

 Wanyama wants government to come up with a national admissions board for all universities which he said will help reduce cases of students admitted in more than one higher education institution thus reducing on the processing time for applicants on the loan scheme.

The Higher Education Students Financing Board has cautioned members of the public against conmen.

This comes after the board extended the time for receiving applications of students seeking loans to be able to continue with their studies.

The boards chairman Fr. Callisto Locheng said the application forms are to be given out free of charge and so members should be aware of unscrupulous individuals who may want to take advantage and solicit money from them.

He says the selection process is done automatically and so no one should be asked to pay to be considered.

23.3 billion shillings has been allocated for the scheme this financial year and a total of 3799 students have benefited from it since its inception in 2014.
