Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is in the final stages of releasing the results of 2014 National housing and population census with detailed indicators beyond the number of people that was released in the provisional results. The head of Communication and Cooperate Affairs at UBOS Mr. Geoffrey Nabongo while addressing Journalists at UBOS head office said the data will contain information right from the sub county level with different indicators.

He notes that the data so far put together will indicate issues related to Education, Health, Housing, and energy among others in order to see how the Country has progressed. Nabongo further says, the final results will also show the economic performance in the Country and how far it has progressed since the time when the census was conducted in 2014.
 Uganda’s population has increased from 24 million in 2002 to 35 million people, according to provisional census results that were released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics in 2014.

World Habitat Awards: Individuals, organizations and governmental agencies with innovative and practical solution to housing needs and problems from any country of the world can apply for the World Habitat Awards.

The awards are given annually to projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems, from the global South as well as the North.

Two winners are selected and awarded with a prize each carrying an amount of £10,000. The award is presented at annual United Nations global celebration of World Habitat Day.

Awards Application Eligibility Criteria:

Projects & approaches are sought that:

  • Demonstrate practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries of the global South as well as the North.
  • Can be transferred or adapted for use as appropriate.
  • View the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, capacity building or education.

The World Habitat Awards competition has a two-stage entry process:

Stage I: submissions need only comprise a summary of the key aspects of the project. From these preliminary submissions, ten projects are selected by an Assessment Committee to go forward to Stage II of the competition.

Stage II: submissions are evaluated by an independent advisory group before being put to a panel of international judges, which include the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Rector of the United Nations University, Tokyo. Evaluation visits are carried out to some of the projects prior to the final judging.”

Application deadline: 1 November.

Full scholarship is available to qualified talented students who meet its high admission standards which include appropriate TOEFL score, GRE and an excellent CGPA from a recognized university.

A minimum CGPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) or 2:1 in the British system, minimum TOEFL score of 577, and a minimum GRE quantitative score of 700 are the basic requirements without which an applicant will most likely not be considered.

Students accepted into the Masdar Institute will be offered a full scholarship which includes the following:

  • 100% tuition fee scholarship
  • Textbooks
  • Laptop
  • Medical Insurance
  • Housing in a single unit apartment (at the Masdar campus)
  • International students will receive reimbursement of travel expenses (economy class air-ticket) into Abu Dhabi and back home after completion of studies.

Travel expenses (return economy class air-ticket) back to the student’s home country at the end of the 1st year of studies will also be reimbursed.

  • Reimbursement of TOEFL and GRE exam fees (upon registration at Masdar Institute and submission of original receipts)
  • A competitive stipend per month (cost of living allowance).
  • No bond or conditions to the scholarship upon graduation

The scholarship and benefits are subject to the student maintaining a minimum CGPA as determined by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and satisfactory progress on their research.

Police has detained 23 employees of National Housing Corporation for allegedly torturing and causing death of one person.

National Housing Corporation is currently involved in a land dispute with local residents of Namungona over proper land ownership.

Ibin Senkumbi the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson says the employees illegally arrested and locked up Isaac Lubega and Godfrey Kasekende in their offices.

They later beat them up and severely injured the duo accusing them of inciting residents not to vacate the land.

Lubega later died on arrival at Mulago hospital while Kasekende is still undergoing treatment for injuries sustained. Another resident Isaac Nsubuga was reportedly shot on the head by a guard of the same company.

Senkumbi says investigations into the incident are still going on.

Ugandans for the first time will be allowed to share housing units with Uganda police force officers after redevelopment of Nsambya, Kibuli and Naguru police barracks.

The Projects Manager of Uganda police Jim Mugunga have confirmed the development and said that the housing units to be shared have been built by police in partnership with the private developers.

The developers have started erecting high rise commercial and police estates on Naguru land, which is 58.9 hectares, Naguru and Nsambya Barracks.

Other police units to be redeveloped and when completed to be shared with the public include regional police training school Masindi, Wandegeya, Katwe, Kabalagala, Old Kampala, Kawempe, Entebbe and Jinja Road police stations.

Police and other government officials have today opened bids that seek to redevelop Nsambya, Kibuli and Naguru police barracks. The police want to redevelop the barracks through a Public Private Partnership.

The redevelopment may save the Uganda Police officers from an acute shortage of housing units.

According to the programme, tens of thousands of police families have stated vacating the above barracks to allow the redevelopment of the above barracks.

The bidding process has been done at the Police Estate Department in Kampala. Over 20 companies have shown interest in working with the police to redevelop Nsambya, Kibuli and Naguru. The police Projects Manager, Jim Mugunga headed the opening exercise.
