Parliament has passed the Immunisation Bill, 2014 that seeks to reduce morbidity, mortality and disability due to life threatening and preventable infections in children and women of reproductive age. The Private Member’s Bill was moved by Yumbe District Woman Representative Huda Oleru in 2014.

Presenting the report of the Health Committee on the Bill, the Chairperson and Mbarara Municipality MP Medard Bitekyerezo said that the existing laws on immunisation are inadequate and are scattered in various Acts and subsidiary legislations. The committee recommended that there should be compulsory immunisation as it was noted that some parents are reluctant to take their children for the exercise, noting that government should provide the vaccines in a timely manner and ensure that they are safe and efficacious.

The Bill also seeks to provide for new vaccines that have been approved; the vaccines include the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine, Human Papilloma Virus and the Rota Virus.

Most Ugandan women have human papilloma virus

Cervical cancer is the most common form of cancers affecting most women in East African countries of Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya. In Uganda alone every year close to 3,577 women get diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 2,464 die from it, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

But cervical cancer is also the most preventable type of cancers worldwide. Cervical cancer is affecting at least 7.32 million of Uganda’s population consisting of women in their reproductive age.

The research from the Ministry of Health in Uganda shows that about 33.6% of the women in Uganda have the human papilloma virus which causes cervical cancer.

Across the world, cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer among women aged between 15-44 years. But in Uganda cervical cancer ranks as the first most common form of cancer, and most of the people affected die in less than five years.

Dr. Gerald Mutungi, the programme manager for Non-Communicable Diseases prevention and control at the Health ministry, says that Uganda plans to immunize women against cervical cancer in schools and health centres. The girls are vaccinated with the Gardasil vaccine.

Causes of painful sex, genital swellings

Painful sex and genital swellings are closely associated with warts which are a form of sexually transmitted infection.

Genetical warts are skin infections of the genital, oral and anal areas as far as the cervix, cavatina, rectum lining, penis-head, urethra, mouth and throats.

The warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). It affects the top skin layer, breeding small hard growths. The people having unprotected sex have 95% chances of getting genetical and venereal warts.

Dangers of wearing second hand clothes

Wearing second hand underwear without washing them first with a detergent can transmit genital warts.

Signs of genetal warts may appear in about three months or in a year. After infection signs, pain comes when passing out urine.

Another sign of genetical warts are bleeding during sex and chronic itching in the genetical areas and throat.

Genetical warts can be closely associated with cervical cancer and vulva cancer in women because cervical cancers are also caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.
