Kenya becomes the first East African country to be granted lower-middle income status, joining the African countries of Morocco, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Senegal, Ghana, Sudan, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zambia. The World Bank has confirmed Kenya’s status following the change in the way the size of its economy is calculated, showing it was 25 per cent larger than previously estimated. Kenya’s GNI per capita income is estimated at about $1,290 (Sh127, 215).

Each year on July 1, the World Bank revises the income classification of the world’s economies based on estimates of GNI per capita for the previous year. According to the World Bank ten countries moved up in their income bracket.

Bangladesh, Kenya, Myanmar, and Tajikistan moved up becoming lower-middle income countries, joining those with annual incomes of $1,046 to $4,125; Mongolia and Paraguay moved from lower middle-income status to upper middle-income; and  Argentina, Hungary, Seychelles, and Venezuela have now moved from the upper middle income category to high income.

South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has fallen out of the lower middle-income classification and back into low-income status. This has been attributed to civil war and a national oil industry at a standstill. Maldives and Mongolia were the highest movers in the rankings – up 13 and 8 places, respectively. Oman and Timor-Leste fell most from their 2013 ranking – down 15 places for both.

In a press release issued by the World Bank it was noted that:

“While we need to measure development progress in different ways, income-based measures, such as GNI, remain the central yardstick for assessing economic performance, “said Kaushik Basu, World Bank Chief Economist and Senior Vice President. “Our latest data show that in terms of this indicator, the world’s economic geography has changed a lot. In 1994, 56.1% of the world’s population – 3.1 billion people – lived in the 64 low-income countries. In 2014, this was down to 8.5%, or 613 million people, living in 31 countries. It is heartening to see that over the last one year itself four nations crossed over that critical line from the low-income to the lower-middle income category.”

Kenya revised its economic data in September last year, expanding its GDP by 25 per cent after recalculation. It is now the fourth biggest economy in sub-Saharan African, with Nigeria, South Africa and Angola being the three biggest economies in the region.

Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Scholarships: The Council of Sidney Sussex College offers annually, for men and women of any nationality, a number of Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Studentships for research or advanced courses in Law or cognate subjects in the University of Cambridge.

The Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Studentships, which are subject to reviews of diligence and progress, are tenable for one year in the first instance but may be renewed annually, up to a maximum of three years.

Their value depends on the candidate’s needs in the light of support from other sources and on the availability of income from the Evan Lewis Thomas Fund.

Under the terms of the will of the late Judge Evan Lewis-Thomas, candidates must have shown proficiency in Law and Jurisprudence, normally by obtaining a university degree in Law, and they must be or become candidates for the Ph.D. Degree, the Diploma in Legal Studies, the Diploma in International Law, the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) in Criminology, or the LL.M Degree.

Law Scholarship

If candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, elections will next be made to up to five Studentships (of between £1,000 and £3,000 per annum, reduced to £1,000 if full funding is obtained from another source).

Election to a Studentship may be made conditional upon satisfactory results in degree examinations and is in all cases conditional upon the person elected being accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies if he/she is a candidate for the Ph.D. Degree, the M.Phil. Degree or a Diploma, or by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Law if he/she is a candidate for the LL.M. Degree.

The government of Uganda, represented by the office of the prime minister has received financing from the World Bank towards the cost of the second Northern Uganda Social Action (NUSAF2) project. The permanent secretary of the prime minister’s office Pius Birigimana says that the government intends to apply part of the proceeds for the consultant services for carrying out annual tracking studies under the public works programme (PWP) of NUSAF2 project.

He says that the activities are aimed at assessing how income earned through PWP impacted on the participants’ livelihoods, particularly on education, health, agriculture, water, sanitation, nutrition, and care for vulnerable people.

Pius says that the consultant shall carry out assessment in selected districts of Uganda that will be agreed upon by the prime minister’s office, prepare and submit the report of its findings as its major out put.

Fellowships in Public Health & Tropical Medicine support outstanding researchers from low- and middleincome countries to establish themselves as leading investigators at an academic institution in a low- and middleincome country location.

Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health.

Fellowship Eligibility

Applications are only accepted in the Public Health and TropicalMedicine Interview Committee remit. This covers research oninfectious and non-communicable diseases within the fields ofpublic health and tropical medicine that is aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health.

This can include laboratory based molecular analysis of field orclinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme.

You must be a national or legal resident of a low- and middleincome country, and be either a:

The salary level should be appropriate for the holder of a competitive grant and allow him/her to focus fulltime on research.

If the fellow is already in receipt of a salary from the hostinstitution, the host institution may use the salary to pay fora replacement member of staff while we provide the fellow’s salary for the duration of the fellowship.

It is not expected that the fellow will hold a salary in addition to the one provided by the Trust.

Overseas allowances will be provided for periods of training or collaborative research spent outside the home institution country, where appropriate.

Research-dedicated costs (excluding salary costs) should not exceed £100 000 per annum.

In what looks like a ploy to gain more popularity among the low income earners in Kampala, the MP for Kampala Central division, Hajji Mohammed Nsereko shocked all revelers when he sat in St. Balikudembe market and ate a sugarcane.

He seated among very dirty market vendors and started eating sugarcane while telling them what is going on in parliament.

Sugarcanes are not new to politicians. Many politicians buy sugarcanes for their supporters during campaigns when they fail to get other forms of refreshments for them.

The vendors in the market hailed Nsereko that among the politicians they have elected it is only Nsereko who has returned to share with them a few things.
