UNFCCC’s internship program allows graduate students to gain insight into the work of the United Nations and provides assistance and training in various professional fields.

The normal duration of an internship is two months, which can be extended for an additional two months.

Internship Eligibility requirements:

i) An undergraduate degree should have been completed with work on a Master degree in progress. Applicants should therefore be enrolled in a recognized university course of study in fields related to the work of the UNFCCC secretariat (including economics, environmental sciences, international law, international relations, natural sciences, political science, human resources and/or public administration) at the time of application and during the internship.

ii) Applicants should be able to work in English.

Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and postgraduate stages should have completed at least four years of study and be a student at the time of application and during the internship.

United Nations Internship Programme – Nairobi: The United Nations Office at Nairobi offers internships for undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in an university program.

Internship programs are for a minimum of three and a maximum of six months. Interns will be placed with various departments of UNEP, UN-HABITAT and UNON in Nairobi only.

The UN secretariat has two working languages, English and French. Interns in Nairobi are expected to be fluent in at least one of the two working languages.

The Applicant Must:

1. Be currently enrolled in a third or fourth year of under-graduate (BA/BSc.) or in a graduate (Masters) or post-graduate (Ph D) programme, and will continue to be enrolled during the period of the internship and after.

(NB: applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least three years of university studies)

2. Submit an endorsement from the Nominating/Sponsoring Institution. (see application form)

3. Be willing to intern on a full-time basis spending five days a week for a period of not less than THREE MONTHS and not exceeding SIX MONTHS.

4. Send a letter of endorsement from his/her educational institution, attesting to the fact that he/she is currently a registered student and will continue to be enrolled for the envisaged period of the internship.

A letter from any one of the following personnel is suggested:

World Health Organization Internship Program: WHO‘s Internship Programme provides a wide range of opportunities for students to gain insight into the work of WHO.

Every year a limited number of places for internships are available.

Internship Application Eligibility Criteria:

  • · Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) both at the time of application and during the internship.
  • · Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages.
  • · Must have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Undergraduates (for instance, students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree) are not eligible to apply.
  • · A minimum of 20 years of age.
  • · Possess a first degree in a public health, medical or social field related to the technical work of WHO.
  • · Fluent in the working language of the office of assignment

Internship Application Dates:

  • · Summer (May to October).
  • · Winter (November to April).

All offline applications should be submitted before the vacancy deadline to the address shown on the vacancy notice. ·  To be considered for a Summer internship, applications are accepted between December 1 – January 31 each year.

  • To be considered for a Winter internship, applications are accepted between September 1 – October 31 each year.
