The workers strike began today, 04th June, 2012. The workers are demanding for the minimum wage, industrial Court, workers involvement in NSSF affairs and the amendment of the NSSF Act to cater for workers” interests, among other demands.

Many workers have kept around Kampala in the City Centre and waited for instructions from their leaders.
The workers threatened to camp in the offices of the government Ministries if the government continues being adamant.

The workers said they will not keep quiet until their demands are met and not leaving the city centre even if they arrested or tear gassed.

They say that they are protected by law and when they are arrested, others will takeover and when released they shall come back to the campaign.

The workers and their leaders first stormed offices of concerned Ministries and demanded that the “long standing workers” demands that fall within the jurisdiction of particular Ministries be handled. But the turn up for the workers in today’s demonstration was minimum.

An intelligence report by the Chieftaincy of Military intelligence (CMI) has advised president Museveni and his government to create more jobs for unemployed youths in order to reduce their involvement in strikes, crimes and demonstrations.

The report signed by one of the directors of CMI in charge of economic monitoring indicates that Uganda/government stands to lose in future if the rate at which demonstrations go on.

The report dated March 28th indicates that the demonstrations are about to become chaotic and fatal in case the problem of unemployment is not vigorously looked into. We hear the report has already reached the president’s office.

Groups of motor cycle (boda boda) riders and operators have vowed to stage a violent demonstration at Entebbe International Airport because the government has banned them from accessing their airport.

The government banned them on Tuesday, a decision that left many boda boda riders disappointed. Fred Kaggwa, a boda boda operator in Entebbe told our informer that a demonstration is likely to erupt at Entebbe Airport anytime if the ban is not reversed.

The ban was instituted by joint security committees at Entebbe international Airport with effect from Wednesday this week in a bid to ensure security.

Moses Kafeero, the Entebbe Airport police commandant confirms that the boda boda riders have been stopped from accessing the airport.

The ban followed security reports that the notorious Al Shabaab fighters in Somalia were plotting to bomb Uganda over its involvement in the Somali insurgence.

Central Broadcasting Service (CBS fm) Kalangala district correspondent Ronald Ssembuusi is reported to have received death threats from former Kalangala boss Daniel Kikola over a news story.

The problem stemmed from a news story aired on the radio on 17th/November/2011 which alleged that the former district boss in being investigated for his involvement in the disappearance of solar panels.

Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda) has learnt that after the story was aired, Kikola called and invited the journalist to his home but he declined. Several calls followed and Kikola allegedly asked the journalist why he refused to go to his resident. As he was hanging up his last call, he allegedly threatened the complainant that something strange will happen to him.

Over 80 solar panels were donated by the African Development Bank through the ministry of water and environment in 2010 to help in circulating clean and safe water in Kalangala Town Council. Unfortunately, about 40 (forty) are missing.

Since 14th/November/2011, police has been investigating officials who were allegedly involved.  Several suspects have been arrested and about 21 solar panels have been recovered.

“I called Mr. Kikola for a comment after coming across his name on the list of those police is supposed to investigate and he refuted allegations saying the solar panels at his home were among those donated saying he purchased them years ago.

Ssembuusi added that after getting the comment he wrote the story and it was later aired which triggered the endless calls.

He has also reported that he has filed a case at Kalangala police station.
