In an Islamic faith, men lead in prayers. This is why they take the front seats in the mosque, according to Mufti Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje and the deputy director of Shariah at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Yahaya Kakungulu.

Mubajje also denies that separating women in the mosques is a form of discrimination. Mubajje says that the Islamic faith and Quran glorifies women more than men.

The deputy director of Shariah also says that they separate women from men in the mosques to prevent both sexes from getting involved in sexual intercourse.

He says that in Islamic faith and understanding prevention is better than cure.

Bank of Uganda has started working on the proposed amendments to the Financial Institutions Act, 2004 in a bid to permit the licensing of, and transacting by financial institutions in Islamic banking in Uganda. Many other East African countries like Kenya and Rwanda already have Islamic banking in place. The governor Bank of Uganda Tumusiime Mutebile says that Islamic banking can work in Uganda as long as there are a few amendments to the Financial Institutions Act.
The amendments to the Financial Institutions Act, 2004 come days after president Museveni told Muslims that the decision on introducing Islamic banking in Uganda will be arrived at in September this year.

Islamic banking is defined as banking activity that is consistent with the principles of the Islamic faith/law (Sharia). Sharia law prohibits fixed, floating payment or acceptance of specific interest fees for money loans.

Muslims around the world are currently observing the holy month of Ramadhan according to the Islamic faith. So today we bring you the dos and the don’ts all Muslims must know and observe during the month of Ramadhan. Ramadhan is the (9th months on the Islamic calender). Muslims fast for 30 days and there after they celebrate Iddi El Fitr.

No eating and or drinking whilst fasting.  Lower your gaze, and there must be no arguing or fighting and no committing sins during the month of Ramadhan. No backbiting, making false swearing and lying.

Avoid smoking, don’t waste time on useless activities, and don’t listen to music even if it’s Christian music in praise of Allah.

Pray all five times a day (observe salaah’s on time), study and learn Islamic knowledge and teachings, recite, read and learn the holy Quran. Muslims earn so high when they observe these Ramadhan codes.

Muslims have no right to wear veils while entering schools, hospitals, markets and public places in Uganda. The new development follows an incidence at Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing when a lecturer sent out two female Muslim girls from class for wearing veils while at school.

Ms Olivia Kyere allegedly ousted Ms Shamim Nakitende and Hanisha Nangoye, on grounds that the school was not an Islamic training centre. It is said that Ms Olivia ousted the two Muslim girls because the Muslims also force non Muslims to put on veils in their schools.

One of the top officials in Uganda government who declined to be named because the issue is too controversial said that Ms Olivia was right because the Muslims also are fond of discriminating non Muslims. “So the old adage of an eye for an eye and tooth for tooth applies here,” the official said. He says that Ms Olivia is not supposed to apologise to the Muslim community for what she did because when the Muslims discriminate non Muslims they don’t come out to apologise.

Recently Makerere University also banned students from wearing veils during the examination period in order to prevent cheating exams.  The government official says that if Muslims don’t want to be discriminated they should also not force non Muslims  to wear veils. It is now a policy in Muslim schools, place of work and high institutions of higher learning to force girls to put on veils including non Muslims.

Last month hundreds of Muslim communities from around the world travelled to Meccato mark the fifth pillar of the Islamic faith (hijja). Muslims go to Meccaonce every 12th month of the Islamic calendar (Dhul Hajji).

Paying Hijja is a must to every Muslim around the world. The Muslims who go toMecca for Hijja first arrive at Jidah (town in Saudi Arabia) for clearance. Sheikh Muzaata Bate, one of the Muslim leaders inKampala says that from Jidah, Muslim pilgrims go to Mecca or medina before they visit other places. While Muslims are inMeccaor Medinah, they are required to put on Ihram (Hijja clothes). Women are supposed to put on white Ihrams while their counterparts the men put on unsown Ihrams.

Muslims also visit Minah city and sleep at Arafa on the 8th day of the month of Dhul. Muslims are also required to fast for at least a day while at Arafa before they go to Muzidalifah city and also have a night there. Muslims also kiss a black stone, throw stones at Jamarat (a place where they believe Satan lives) and later they walk around the Kaaba seven times.

Able bodied Muslims also have to run the distance between the town ofMarwahand Safah and whoever finishes the running as to laugh loudly in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim who was told to sacrifice his child but later God gave him a lamb to sacrifice. Hijja cerebrations last for 12 days during the month of Dhul.
