The Anti-Corruption Civil Society organizations say that parliament should not excuse spouses of leaders not to be included in declaration of wealth publically.

The Anti-Corruption Coalition Uganda, Platform for Social Justice and Transparency International-Uganda and Asha Rayzyn Foundation members while appearing before the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee Chaired by West Budama County South MP, Jacob Oboth Oboth say that provisions that bar the public to what their leaders own should be removed from the existing leadership code.

The Executive Director the Anti-corruption Coalition Uganda, Cissy Kagaba says that some leaders hide their wealth in the names of their children and spouses which makes it hard to fight corruption.

However, the MP for Kyaka South, Jackson Kafuzi and Agago County MP, Edward Mackmot Otto had wanted spouses and children of leaders not be included among the persons whose wealth should be declared to IGG’S office, saying that that this would be infringing on their privacy.

MPS are concerned that inclusion of leaders’ spouses and children in wealth declaration could cause them problems because if spouses do not disclose all their wealth to husbands, IGG would take it that it was deliberate.

The group also proposed that in the Leadership Amendment Bill 2016 the tribunal be appointed on a full-time basis so as cases of errant leaders are handled in time.

They also added that the head of the tribunal should be at the status of the chief magistrate’s court.
