Minister for Youths and children Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi

The unemployed youths who are yearning to go to Arab countries for jobs have threatened to start engaging themselves in criminal activities if government does not lift a ban it put on Ugandans who want to go to these countries for work. The threats come after these for the second time stormed the Ministry of Gender demanding to meet the permanent secretary and state Minister for youths and children over this issue but in vein.

The youth have today turned very angry and furious after the state Minister for Youths and children Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi snubbed a meeting with them even when it was clear to them that she was receiving office and the youths had all the hopes that they were to talk to her over their issue of concern.

The youths, especially women, who already have their passports ready are demanding from government a lift of the ban for those who are seeking for jobs of house maids and cleaners. They converged in numbers at the Ministry of gender where they made several threats including joining prostitution, iron bar hitting and destroying government property.

Bulola Herbert Anderson heads these youths.

Meanwhile, commenting about this issue as she took over office, the Minister for Gender, Labor and Social Development Hajjati Janat Mukwaya advised the youths to remain calm as this issue is being investigated. For her case, the outgoing state minister for youth and children Evlyn Anite advised the incoming minister to always give time to youth complaints, talk to them and try to solve their issues.

Shock and grief befell on people of Kampala on Friday morning when a woman jumped from the 14th floor of Workers House building and died.

The woman was identified as Justine Nalugya, a resident of Kampala district. The relatives to the deceased said that Nalugya was so stressed because she had a degree from Makerere University but she had not been employed for the last three years. Rose Nambi, a relative to the deceased told the people who had gathered at the scene of suicide that Nalugya walked to Workers House this morning expecting to get a job.

“She told us that a certain friend of hers called Peter had promised to connect her to a job today Friday. She had even mobilized funds from us to bribe the employer for the job. It seems when she reached there she discovered that Peter had conned her and she decided to end her life,” she hopes.

The deceased was dressed in a black skirt and a yellow blouse. She first folded her skirt and threw her bag down before jumping to her death. The police are hunting for a man identified as Peter to help it with its investigations. The problem is that there are 18 men at Workers House with a name Peter. So the police have found it hard to establish which Peter the deceased had gone to see. The police have taken Nalugya’s body to Mulago hospital.

Jobs are scarce in most parts of the world. In countries like Uganda, South Africa and some parts of Europe getting a job is as hard as passing through the hole of a needle. Our reporters to day bring you the problems job seekers in Uganda go through. For purposes of being accurate, we have allowed job seekers to tell you their own experience.

John Lwanyaaga: I have a degree in mass communication from Makerere University, but one day I applied for a job in European Union (Uganda) and I merged out the best.  I was promised to start the work a week after. But in the mid of the week I received a call that instructed me to give it two more weeks. At the end of two weeks, I received no reply and I decided to go there. I got the shock of the day when another person from the ruling tribe was working in my place.

Jane Nakazibwe: I hold a degree in community psychology from Makerere University.  Some employers/interviewers demand sex before they give us the jobs. This happened to me when one day I applied for a job in one of the companies owned by Indians in Kampala. An Indian told me that I qualify for the job but I had to first fall in love with him if I needed the job. I told him that I was, married the man refused. And I needed the job so…

Grace Nabagulanyi: I have a degree in business administration from Nkumba University. I had to bribe to get a job. I am working in one of the beverage companies in Uganda. The people who were on the interview panel told me that the job would be there for me only when I gave them one million shillings-my dad sold his two cows and I got the job.

Robert Musiime: I don’t have a job yet I am a graduate of Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University. I have failed to get a work because to get a job in Uganda one needs to have links with the ruling government or to be from western Uganda where president Museveni comes from.

Are you a nurse, doctor or pharmacists? Start smiling now because the government of Uganda has got jobs for you.

The Senior Private Secretary to His Excellence the Vice President of Uganda, Hajji Hassan Nakabaale says that the office of the Vice President has got requests from England among other countries in Europe to send their qualified pharmacists, nurses and doctors.

He says that a doctor will be paid $30,000 per annum, a pharmacist $15000 per year and a nurse $12000 per annum.

He has told our informers that there are thousands of opportunities for Uganda medical practitioners both in Uganda and abroad. So Nakabale has urged students to opt for science subjects in order to target the increasing job opportunities for doctors, nurses, midwives and pharmacists among others.

She could have been a senior and very effective worker on Dembe FM radio, but Christine Mawadri has resigned her job for a juicy post on NBS TV.

We have been told that NBS TV has offered her five millionUgandashillings compared to two million shillings Dembe FM has been offering to her. It also seems that Mawadri is becoming a star in quitting jobs. A few months back Mawadri resigned from Top Radio for Dembe FM.

Dembe FM is also experiencing an exodus of workers. We hear that one of their other workers, Isaac Katende is preparing to cross over to Beat FM. Efforts to get a comment from the management of Dembe FM were futile.

Over 16 journalists at Hot 100 FM radio owned by Kampala’s business tycoon, Isaac Mulindwa who is also the PAM Awards chief have quit in a period of less than five weeks, citing ill treatment at the workplace.

Some of the workers still working at the radio station have informed us that the way the staff members at Hot 100 FM are quitting is similar to the one written in the bible when Israelites walked from Egypt to Canaan.

We have been told that some of the workers who have quit the station include Racheal Kay, L. Benzo and Bryan Mckenzie among others. Some of the workers who have quit the station we have managed to interview say they have quit after disagreements with the management over salaries, and poor working conditions among others. Some of the workers who have quit Hot 100 FM we hear have joined New Vision Group’s X fm.
