The Kabaka of Buganda, his highness Ronald Muwenda Mutebii II has called upon government to include vocational training in the national curriculum.

He was speaking in Mengo while officiating at the 5th graduation ceremony of Buganda royal institute of business and technical education where 1260 students received diplomas in business and technical education.

The Kabaka says the young people are slowly losing interest in pursuing education due to the high number of unemployed yet educated youth.

He says while the learners’ are busy in lectures rooms learning, the changing world order demands a lot of practical skills than a lot of qualification.

The Kabaka says Buganda kingdom is engaged in programmes and projects aimed at educating children to secure better future, with a key focus on vocational skills.

The government recently launched the Universal Post Primary Vocational Training with the help of GTZ but it is still unclear whether and how it will ameliorate Uganda’s alarming unemployment situation.

Statistics from the Ministry of Labour indicate that 390,000 students who finish tertiary education each year have only 8,000 jobs to compete for. This means that for every one job that is available they are about 50 people to fill it.

Buganda King, Kabaka Mwenda Muteebi

After making two unsuccessful attempts to visit Kayunga district, the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Mutebi II is expected to make a third attempt to visit the area next month.

The Mengo chief in charge of Bugerere County, Ssevume Musoke says the Kabaka is expected in the area next month to officially open Muteesa 1 royal University branch in Nazigo trading centre.

Ssevume says preparations to welcome the Kabaka were going on, adding that this time they are hoping to have no interference from government like was the case earlier.

Last year in September, government blocked the Kabaka’s visit to Kayunga district citing security concerns.

The move led to violent riots in Kampala and some parts of Central region in which over 20 people died and property worth millions of shillings was destroyed.
