The mp for Bujenje county who has been the minister of information and national guidance Kabakumba Matsiko has called for unity among Bunyoro leaders if they are to benefit from the oil resource in the kingdom.

She said this while addressing a gathering during thanksgiving ceremony for Bulisa county MP Stephen Birahwa Mukitale in Kampala.

Uganda Information and national Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Masiko

Matsiko said that as leaders they need one voice while negotiating with the government on what should be given to the kingdom.

She says that if they get divided they will instead be turning oil into a curse to the region rather than making it a blessing.

Meanwhile Mukitale warned the land grabbers in Buliisa district to stop immediately saying that he will not keep seeing land being taken by the rich as the peasants remain suffering.

He said that the land grabbers have been fighting him but said that he is not scared of any intimidation.

He called upon the public to remain focused while dealing with oil issues.

The government has rejected attempts by schools to take advantage to raise school fees for next term as a result of rising cost of food and other commodities.

This comes after the Daily Monitor newspaper carried affront page story in its Saturday Edition indicating at the close of the first term many schools were proposing increases in school fees ranging from 15,000-50,000 shillings.

Uganda Information and national Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Masiko

But the state minister of information and national carrier guidance Kabakumba Mastiko says government schools have not sought approval from the ministry of education in line with education Act of 2008.

She says the government has also directed that private schools be urged against increasing school fees midyear as this will disrupt education on many students.

Schools have been chocking at the rising costs of food and other essential commodities which has affected the quantity and quality of food they are able to give to their students.

Due to raising costs of food, 100kg bag of Beans now costs 140000 from 100000 while a bag of maize flour costs 140000 from 70000 thousand.

In a move to curtail increasing prices of agricultural products, government has proposed to invest in irrigation schemes to ensure farmers can produce food crops all year through.

The Minister of Information and National Guidance, Kabakumba Matsiko said this while reacting to increased public concerns of rising food prices that have increased the standard of living for most Ugandans.

Uganda Information and national Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Masiko

Kabakumba says other than improving production of agricultural products, government has no power to set up price ceiling in a liberalized economy.

Kabakumba added that government will not reduce the taxes because there are many services the public wants government to provide from the revenue raised from taxes.

The minister dimised criticisms against the government for the depreciating value of the shilling against the US dollar.

She said that in combating the problem of a depreciating shilling over a dollar, the Central Bank issued more dollars into circulation but it has not worked. She said other factors are beyond government’s reach.

The minister explained that dependency on nature is a key problem because when rain doe not drop food production will be low causing high demand that skyrockets the prices.

The Government has appealed to all Ugandans to participate in the 2011 general elections that will see Ugandans electing a President, members of Parliament, District and Sub-county local government leaders.

Uganda Information and national Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Masiko

The Minister of Information and National Guidance, Kabakumba Matsiko says the government will ensure that the elections are free and fair and reflect the wishes of the people of Uganda.

In the past there have been threats from some sections of the opposition who have threatened to boycott the 2011 elections if the current electoral commission is not changed. The opposition Inter Party coalition accuses the current elections commission headed by Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu of bias and inefficiency in handling the past elections.

Kabakumba however says there is no reason as to why some people should withdraw from the 2011 elections because with the reforms that the government has put in place in relation to the various laws related to elections, the elections in 2011 will be more free and fair than the previous elections.

In the past the government has been accused of holding elections that with enormous irregularities that are said to have only enabled the government to rig its way to power.
