Peter Mayiga the Buganda Katikiro

The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has warned government on the proposed land amendment bill that seeks to give government powers for compulsory acquisition of people’s land saying it will lead to discontent.

Last week government tabled a constitutional amendment bill seeking to amend article 26 sub section 2 of the constitution saying that disagreements over compensation is delaying government projects.

Mayiga says that the Buganda Lukiiko should not allow government to take people’s land without compensation, insisting subsidiary laws should be made to protect the land owners.

Addressing the lukiiko at Mengo today, the Katikiro mentioned that he has visited the president twice in Rwakitura and Entebbe reminding him about the remaining assets for the kingdom and now urges the loyalists to pray that the kingdom fully receives back her assets. About 80 or so land titles are expected to be given back to the mighty kingdom which the president wants to be transferred into Kabaka’s name.

However members of the lukiiko advise the Katikiro to be very vigilant as he receives the titles as the first titles were very much questioned. They also reported district authorities who have insisted on not returning kingdom buildings and land, which fails kingdom work.

Buganda King, Kabaka Mwenda Muteebi

The same somber mood hanged over Uganda Parliamentary chambers on Tuesday this week as MPs moved to pay homage to the one and half year old Khan Kakama, who was found dead after being kidnapped for ransom.

The baby went missing three weeks back from his parent’s home in Bugolobi, a posh Kampala suburb. The police searched for him in vain until it landed on the baby’s decomposing body in a Kamwokya Kampala city slum.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Eng. JB Walusimbi in a statement today (22nd June 2010) expressed grief over the Incident calling for more protection of  children within the kingdom and outside.

Walusimbi says the incident is regrettable and measures should be put in place to ensure such cases are prevented in future. He also challenges the central government of Uganda to punish perpetuators of murders in the country.
