Police in Kisoro has arrested over 150 Congolese’s and Rwandese nationals in a joint operation against the illegal immigration into the country.

The police say 63 of them were deported while others appeared before court to answer charges of illegal entry into Uganda.

Police says 78 of the people arrested were found to be Congolese while 72 are from Rwanda. The illegal immigrants enter the country through Bunagana, Chanika and other entry points. 87 were yesterday produced to grade one magistrate and pleaded guilty to illegal entry before the magistrate Prosy Katushabe.

Katushabe says keeping the in custody could cause the government to spend a lot of money feeding them and besides they lack space in the prison.

The joint operation was conducted by police and other security agencies after reports of increased cases of illegal immigrants at the border points.

According to the police sources, the operation follows reports that Rwandans and Congolese were travelling at night through Bunagana and Chanika.

The Resident District Commission (RDC) Kisoro Ahmed Doko told the press that the issue of illegal entry into the country has a major challenge as Uganda borders are open to everyone.

The Kisoro district police commander Reuben Wasima says the operations would continue until the illegal entry is checked. He says they have discovered that foreigners come in large numbers on market days in centres near the borders where they are easily mixed up with the crowd and pass unnoticed into the country.
