TEDxNakaseroWomen is back again at an event being held on 9th November 2017 at Mackinnon Suites, Kampala.

This is the fourth TEDxWomen event happening ever since TEDxNakaseroWomen started in 2013.

We are thus pleased to bring you the live coverage of the event where local speakers are presenting short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations, and performances on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder aimed at provoking conversations that matter.

TEDxNakaseroWomen is an independently organised event focused on inspiring talks, innovations, experiences and ideas worth spreading.

“We believe that TEDxNakaseroWomen is a meaningful and timely platform for the people of Kampala to engage in ideas worth spreading, to learn and hear about innovations that often times nobody notices and to steer conversations that stimulate debate for development,” says Prossy Kawala.

The theme for the year 2017 is Bridges. The event will, therefore, explore bold insights as well as personal stories and perspectives that offer bridges across race, background, belief, opinion and the differences that divide.

The event is  taking place at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Uganda this Tuesday 28th July 2015 and ends on Wednesday 29th 2015.

It is running under the theme; “AMICAALL Uganda @ 15 years; towards a sustainable urban HIV/AIDS Response”.

AMICAALL Uganda is a Chapter of an Africa-wide Alliance of Mayors established in 1997 and with headquarters in Windhoek, Namibia.

Hon. Minister of Local Government Adolf Mwesige and H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of Uganda are to preside over the gathering of about 500 urban technical and elected Leaders during the 4^th Urban Leaders’ HIV/AIDS Forum and 12^th Annual General Meeting 2014/15.

Urban Leaders are to take stock of the impact of AMICAALL work in the urban response to HIV/AIDS over the years. They will discuss the question of the sustainability and devise strategies.

The forum is an opportunity to launch the fundraising drive for Mayors Foundation and make the first financial contributions.

In attendance are key representatives of government, Development Partners, Civil Society as well as well-wishers of AMICAALL.

Maria Kiwanuka, Uganda Minister of Finance

The five East African community member states Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzani and Kenya will on Wednesday simultaneously read their 2011/2012 national budgets in their respective parliaments.

All the five EAC member states are expected to announce business incentives that promote regional integration and reflect the motives of the Customs Union that the five countries embarked on starting July 1^st 2010.

Uganda’s 2011/2012 national budget will be read by newly appointed Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Maria Kiwanuka before Members of parliament, diplomats and the President at the International Conference Center.

The budget is expected to focus on improvement of infrastructure like the roads network, railways, energy provision, boosting the National Agriculture Advisory services, and employment creation among others.

President Museveni

Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will on Tuesday June 7^th officially open the 9^th Parliament at the International conference Center in Kampala.

He will also deliver the state of the nation address, which he is obliged by the constitution to deliver before Parliament every year in order to highlight the key issues in the country and the government is handling them.

The President’s address is expected to focus on his government’s plans to address the current economic hardships, employment creation and the budgetary priorities of his government for the 2011/2012 financial year.

The Minister of Information and National Gudance, mary Karoro Okurut says the President’s address will also touch on the fight against corruption, delivery of services in the past and coming year, education, health and infrastructure development.

His address will be like a sneak peak into the government’s 2011/2012 Uganda national budget to be read by Finance Minister Maria Kiwanuka on Wednesday at the same venue.

As part of the events to mark the WPFD, a press freedom day panel discussion has been organised to discuss issues pertaining to press freedom and new media in Uganda.

The panel discussion taking place at Imperial Royale Hotel are organised by the Uganda Journalists Association in conjunction with DDP, US Embassy in Uganda, Human Rights Center Uganda, Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication and the Uganda Communications Commission.

According to Joshua Kyalimpa, the President of UJA, the vent is being held under the theme “Extending Frontiers, Removing Barriers to Free and Pluralistic Media in Uganda.”

The panel discussion are on the role of social and digital media in extending freedom of expression, to be hosted by Peter Kibazo and discussed by Dr Shaka Sali of the Voice of America, Engineer Godfrey Mutabazi of the Uganda communications Commission and Denis Juuko, a Journalist and social media enthusiast.

Another panel discussion on the pleasures and pitfalls of critical media in Uganda, Public and civil society’s expectations of the media will be chaired by Dr George Lugalambi the Head of Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication, and will be discussed by Daniel Kalinaki of Daily Monitor, Godbar Tumushabe of Accord and Barbara Among of The New Vision.

The 3^rd Panel will be on what does the future hold for the media in Uganda? It will be discussed by Andrew Mwenda of the Independent magazine, Fred Opolot of the Uganda Media Centre, and Haruna Kanabi of the Independent Media Council of Uganda.

Nobert Mao DP Presidint

When Forum for Democratic Change president was remanded in funny circumstances as the Nabweru magistrate Justin Atukwasa claimed to be busy to hear his bail application, the opposition leader was also taken to Nakasongola prison.

The Public Relations Officer of Uganda Prisons, Frank Baine at first told journalists that the former presidential candidate was transferred “for his own security”.

“We explained this to him and took him far from here but we shall produce him later when the time to return to court is due,” Baine said. Mao who was arrested and charged with inciting violence will re-appear in Court on May 15^th when his case will be heard. He was imprisoned after declining to ask for bail.

Baine said DP activists had launched a “walk to freedom” protest that will see them forcefully “evacuate” Mao from Luzira prison and the  Prison officers were worried the confrontation between police and DP supporters might injure Mao and other prisoners at Luzira maximum prison.

It is for the same reason of fearing protesters attacking Luzira that Besigye was also remanded to Nakasongola prison which is some 60 kilometers away. Besigye is due in Court on April 27^th when his bail application will be heard.

President Museveni

Museveni who was speaking to Ugandans in a live video broadcast at Bukedde TV in Kampala on Thursday evening said Ugandans should not “worry about Besigye and walk to work protests” saying his government will stop the protesters and ensure “there is no disturbance” to public peace.

He dismissed claims that Besigye and other opposition leaders can overthrow his government through protests. Museveni said Besigye and other protesters have no capacity to remove his “ elected government” that has “massive support of Ugandans”.

“Leadership in Uganda can only be changed through elections. The elections ended and those people were defeated,” Museveni said.

He laughed off reports that Bsigye is planning his own swearing in ceremony as “president” on Thursday May 12^th when Museveni will be swearing in for another 5-year term in office.  Museveni urged Ugandans against joining politicians who he says are breaking the laws of Uganda.

Museveni did not comment on the arrest and imprionment of Besigye earlier on Thursday, just insisting that the govermnent has “medicine” for Besigye and the situation where he is granted bail by court only to “commit the same crime again”.

Museveni in the 2011 elections beat Besigye, his closest rival over the past three elections by a big margin this time, getting 68% of the vote, to Besigye’s 26%. Besigye and the other six presidential candidates however all dismissed the election as a sham that did not reflect the will of Ugandans.
