Prof. Omaswa hands over his report to Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda

The report recommends urgent restructuring of staff and promotions as well as tallying of salaries.

The report further calls for increased government funding not only to Makerere University but to all public universities.
While handing over the report this morning, Prof Omaswa said a systematic absorption of donor funds and foreign aided projects within Makerere is also crucial.

He noted that Makerere is still highly ranked and respected university in the world and it’s possible to reclaim that honor if appropriate measures are taken.

Uganda-Cancer-InstituteAs the country continues to register more cancer cases, Makerere students from the psychology school this week walked to the cancer institute as a way of showing solidarity with the patients and the doctors over what is now happening in the country in regards to the disease. The students led by their dean, Prof. Julius Kikoma and the acting vice chancellor, Prof. Basasha say they can put their expertise to preventing cancer to practice since it is so crucial in addition to the medical approach but Prof. Basasha tasked the psychology students to encourage the rest to also do the same as a gesture to show support to the institute.

On receiving the students and their heads, the director Uganda cancer institute, Dr. Jackson Oryem said the misery at the institute should be shared by all of the citizens instead of the institute and the patients and on this matter he emphasized awareness as a key factor if cancer is to be scaled down. He further challenged the population to always check up for cancer among other silent disease to avoid ending up in hospital when the situation is worse.

The students also donated a number of items to the institute and also engaged in community work around the institute as they were accompanied by the cranes head coach Micho and singer Moze radio.

The dean of the school of women and gender issues at Makerere university, Prof. Josephine Ahikire is called for student engagement in the fight against education sexualization at the country’s highest and oldest education institution. In a symposium held at the women and gender school at Makerere, Prof. Ahikire said a well structured system to handle issues of sexualization at the university should be strongly set up to help handle such issues for the students to send their issues for maximum solving. She also added that such cases have been happening at the university but have not seen light since the victims have chosen to stay silent and now they are asking students to be the rape preventers for the vice to be curbed down.

However, prof. Maggie Kigozi said this is a much bigger problem that calls for feminists to fight with all strong terms possible to create a safe environment for all students.
The students narrated what happens at the University for such Cases to occur. The new initiative comes after one of the female students at the university was raped by a lecturer who is now facing court for his illegal act.

The task force set up by the ministry of education to streamline the staff structure at Makerere University has discovered a serious financial crisis.

Prof. John Ddumba Sentamu, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University

The team led by Professor Francis Omaswa today appeared before the education committee of parliament and gave some highlights of their findings.

The team says that the tuition fees at Makerere are low compared to the actual unit cost of university education and other public universities.

The task force has also observed that the delay in remittance of tuition fees for the students sponsored by state house has also affected the operations of the University.

According to the findings state house now owes over 4 billion shillings to Makerere University.

Now the committee chairperson Sylvia Namabidde is asking that all the arrears owed to public universities be cleared immediately.

The task force was set up to see how staff remuneration could be improved after the staff complained of poor pay.

Peoples’ money in Uganda is spent extravagantly. We have been told that the swearing in ceremony of the new Makerere University Guild President, Ivan Kata has cost the university 200 millions. The money has been used to buy eats, buffets, sodas and beers just to please the students.

The swearing in ceremony took place at Makerere University’s main hall on Friday and the guest of honour has been Democratic Party President Norbert Mao.

Ivan Kata is a member of the Democratic Party. But the NRM members and leadership in Makerere have condemned the university’s decision to use 200 millions in organising a students party when some halls of residence are leaking, students eat poorly and some corners of the university have no security lights. The critics say that the university would have used only 20 million shillings in organising the party.

Kata thanked the students’ leadership for intrusting him with the mandate to lead the ivory tower (Makerere University). He promised to cough fire when president Museveni’s government or the ministry of education and or Makerere University passes anti students policies.
