A section of members of parliament have criticized the Pan African parliament demand for African countries to legalize abortion.

The Pan African Parliament Permanent Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs recommended that African countries that are signatories to the Maputo Protocol have been urged to safeguard reproductive health rights of women by permitting abortion in cases of sexual assault or where pregnancy poses a risk to the physical or mental health of a woman. States have also been urged to decriminalize abortion by reforming their laws.

MPs who were reached for their opinion over this matter said that they will not allow this resolution passed in parliament legalizing abortion saying the children have a right to exist. The woman Member of Parliament for Kitgum district Margret Rwamwaka said that women should not be legally allowed to abort pregnancy even if the pregnancy was as a result of rape.

The woman Member of Parliament for Koboko district Margaret Babadiri said that she does not support termination of pregnancy even if it’s rape because the unborn baby is life and abortion is killing a person.

She said that  she can only support   termination of the pregnancy  on grounds that the unborn is a risk to the mother but not pregnancy that was as a result of  rape because the unborn baby may become a very useful person in the future.

The national female youth MP  Anna Adeke said that legalizing abortion will give girls a way of going with men with the option of aborting  when they conceive pregnancy .
