It seems the speed at which Uganda’s education system/policies move at the moment the sky is the limit. The government of Uganda, according to the Commissioner for secondary education in Uganda government, John Agaba, is to construct science laboratories and information Communication Technology laboratories across the country using resources from Iran, China, Cuba and France among other donors.

Agaba says that this would encourage more students doing science combinations and science related studies in Mathematics and economics. As you read this mathematics and Information Communication Technology studies in Uganda are compulsory.

Agaba says that about 600 government– aided A-Level schools have Information Communication Technology laboratories and the government has been retooling teachers all over Uganda to teach Information Communication Technology.

The Government through the ministry of Education and Sports has already retooled over 400 of teachers and 360 head teachers in regard to Information Communication Technology.

Information Communication Technology and mathematics subjects are compulsory in Uganda schools, the minister for Education and Sports Jessica Alupo told the media in Kampala on Wednesday.

Alupo says that unlike in the previous years, Mathematics and Information Communication Technology subjects will be compulsory for all Senior Five (S.5) and Senior 6 students across the country. The academic year for Senior 5 and Senior 6 begins on Monday next week.

According to the new education arrangement announced by Alupo, all student in S.5 must choose either mathematics or information communication technology subjects on top of their three-subject combination.

The decision for S5 and S6 students to undertake mathematics and Information Communication technology follows the new guidelines approved by Uganda Cabinet last month.  In addition to mathematics and information technology and general paper all students will offer other three principal subjects in their combinations.

MSc in Medical Statistics Scholarships by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) : To have sufficient knowledge to work as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry, students studying for a first degree will usually need to complete an MSc in statistics.

GSK considers it important to invest in the education of statisticians and will provide scholarships to enable students to study for an MSc in UK.

These consist of a maintenance grant together with all full time study fees. Worldwide applications are welcome. However, please note GSK is only able to cover the equivalent of UK/EU course fees.

Scholarship holders may wish to apply for employment at GSK at the conclusion of the course, and will be considered for vacancies at that time.

Scholarships will be available to study on the courses shown below. All these courses provide advanced training in statistical theory and practice.

The Uganda Prisons has registered an improvement in the performance of prisoners in the just released Primary Leaving Examinations results.

The Prisons’ publicist, Frank Beine says out of the 69 candidates who sat for PLE last year, 7 got first grade; 31 got 2nd grade while 13 were in 3rd division 3.

In division 4, 6 inmates got 4th grade, 3 were in Division U while 9 missed the examinations.

Beine says Semakula Frank was the best student with a total of Aggregate 8, having scored 2 aggregates in English, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science.

Those who got aggregate 9 include Abele Asuman, Okello Vincent John and Ziraba Daniel.

Solomon Ahimbisibwe got Aggregate 11, having scored 3 in English, 3 in Science, 2 in Social Studies and 3 in Mathematics.

Kizza David Willington and Abubaker Hassan both scored 12 aggregates.

Among those in Division X, having not sat any of the examinations are Opolot John Stephen, Sam Drichi Edema, Justus Andrew Tukamushaba, Ibrahim Ruhweza and Stephen Opus.

Others are Moses Musisi, Peter Kiiza, Alaali Jackson and Agaba Richard.

Beine says the Upper Prisons School garnered a 95% success rate in the 2011 examinations.
