The government of Uganda has denied it is targeting Muslims in arresting suspects in the current investigations into the July 11 bomb blasts in Kampala that killed 76 people.

Minister Matia Kasaija

The Member of Parliament for Maikindye East, Hussein Kyanjo complained on the floor of parliament that the government was arresting many Muslims in connection with the terrorist attacks in Kampala, and sought to know if the government considered Muslims as terrorists.

But the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Matia Kasaija said the government security agencies are arresting people connected to the terrorist attacks irrespective of their religion.

Kasaija said the government regrets if most or all those arrested are Muslims, but there is no particular policy or intention to arrest Muslims.

The minister revealed that the security agencies in Uganda have so far 16 people in connection to the bomb attacks at Lugo Kyadondo rugby club and Ethiopia village Restaurant in Kabalagala.

Kyanjo had complained that the government was arresting Somalis, Pakistan’s and other people whom he claimed are Muslims.

The minister says the government will do everything possible to arrest and punish those involved in the Kampala bomb blasts and to ensure such a horrendous act does not happen again.
