The officials of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who are facing treason charges in the High Court in Kampala have complained that appearing every month without trial is so costly for them as individuals and the party in general.

The officials include Ingrid Turinawe (FDC woman leader), Sam Mugumya (FDC Presidential aide), LC3 chairman for Nangabo Sub County in Wakiso district, Tony Ssempebwa, John Walakira and Patrick Mayanja and FDC youth chairman, Francis Mwijukye.

Turinamwe told court on Monday that the government is using the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to delay their trial such that they run out of pocket.

Mugumya warned that they are about to boycott the court process if the DPP fails to complete investigations into their trial.

The Nakawa chief magistrate, Esther Namabayo adjourned the matter to April 16 for mention. The case was adjourned after the state prosecutor; Beatrice Odongo requested court to adjourn the matter to April month saying that the DPP was still compiling the facts to be used in courts against the suspects.

The government side alleges that the suspects between August and October 2011 in Kampala, Hoima, Wakiso and Mityana district planned to overthrow the NRM government by use of guns. The suspects are being represented by their lawyers Akello Patricia, and Ernest Kalibbala.

The list of candidates vying for the 9 Uganda slots in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) which most parties have been keeping as a top secret has been revealed now. The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has three candidates in the race: Salaam Musumba, former MP for Busongora South, Christopher Kibazanga and former Lead of Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo.

The  candidate of the Democratic Party is the party’s legal advisor, Fred Denis Mukasa Mbidde. Others vying for the same on DP ticket are Vincent Mayanja, John Mary Sebuwufu, Deo Kijjambu and Anselm Sebuguzi.

Former MP Ben Wacha, is to contest on an independent ticket. Former presidential candidate Mohammad Kibirige Mayanja is the  candidate of Jeema while former MP for Lubaga South, Suzan Nampijja is the person the CP president John Ken Lukyamuzi has fronted for EALA seat. The candidate of Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) is Peter Walubiri.

The National Resistance Movement has three slots for EALA and the party has fronted former lands minister, Omara Atubo (chosen by President Museveni), Hope Mwesigye backed by prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and Former Makerere Guild President, Sara Kagingo who is also fronted by backed by Mbabazi. We have reliably learnt that the former EALA Members, Lydia Wanyoto, Dan Kidega and Mike Sebalu among others are not going to be re-fronted by their respective parties.

Following the recent success in the East African court of Justice in a matter filled and argued by the Democratic Party’s chief legal advisor, Fred Denis Mukasa Mbidde, the future for most current East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MPs has diminished. The requirement by each party to present a candidate has a result of the court’s decision has reduced the NRM MPs number in EALA to three as opposed to their former 7 and thereby each party taking one slot each including FDC totaling to 9 as required by each partner state according to the East African Treaty.

Accordingly, the list of candidates vying for the 9Ugandaslots in the EALA, which most parties have been keeping as a top secret has finally leaked to the press.

The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has three candidates in the race so far Salaam Musumba, former MP for Busongora South, Christopher Kibazanga and former Lead of Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo.

The Democratic Party is yet to present a candidate for the DP slot although by court order the DP chief Legal advisor Fred Denis Mukasa Mbidde seems to be enjoying an automatic right to take it up.

Former MP Ben Wacha, who is also an FDC member, is to contest on an independent ticket. Former presidential candidate Mohammad Kibirige Mayanja is the official candidate of Jeema while former MP for Lubaga South, Suzan Nampijja is the person the CP president John Ken Lukyamuzi has fronted for EALA seat. The candidate of Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) is city lawyer Peter Walubiri.

At the beginning of the month of September this year, the leadership of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) announced as it was set to change its leadership direct from the village level to national level. The UYD electoral commission was being headed by Vincent Mayanja, the former parliamentary candidate in Lubaga south.

Mayanja had called upon all persons interested to take over the association’s leadership to hand in their application letters. The village polls were supposed to take place at the beginning of October and end in the first week of November this year. However, we have learnt that all this arrangement died in the bud and nothing took place.

When asked for a comment, the UYD secretary general, Samuel Kayayu Muyizzi explained that the polls would take place any time. He denied reports that UYD had failed to organise the polls.
