The Local Government Minister, Hon. Adolf Mwesigye confirmed that cabinet is expected to approve 5 new cities in the country in a couple of weeks from now following, a thorough check for all the guidelines needed for a place to be elevated to the level of a city.

According to the Minister, over 15 municipalities applied calling for elevation to city level but only Mbarara, Arua, Gulu, Jinja, Mbale and Fort portal qualified for the status and if passed then the country will have six cities. The minister also defended the move by government to create new counties and districts saying they are only aimed at extending services to the communities as well as good leadership though he did not rule out government to have in place regional governments in future.

The Minister said this at a press conference to announce the coming African day on decentralization and local governments slated for 10th this month with the main celebrations to be held in Mbarara district.

Former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has vowed to go ahead with his planned presidential bid consultations starting this week in Mbale regardless of the warnings by the Inspector General of Police, General Kale Kayihura.

Speaking at his first News Conference this morning, Mbabazi said that there is nothing that will stop him from enjoying his right to assemble and associate so long as he operates under the law. Quoting the Public Order Management law, Mbabazi noted that the Police have no mandate to stop his consultations and he is not ready to succumb to any form of threats by the Inspector General of police.

Meanwhile Mbabazi indicated that his lawyers will soon be meeting with the Police and the Electoral Commission to further interpret the law on public gathering for purposes of clarity.

Meanwhile he scoffed at those who are opposed to his visit in Eastern Uganda, adding that it’s unfortunate that there are Ugandans with such attitudes in the 21st century. Mbabazi noted that such attitudes will not divert him from focusing on achieving a peaceful change of government.

Mbabazi has stressed that the notion of sole candidature is alien to the NRM party that believes in democratic principles and therefore members should desist from ring fencing specific party positions.

Hundreds of students, pupils and general passengers have been seen stranded in taxi and bus parks across the country as heavy traffic jam affected the easy movement of vehicles.

The situation was chaotic in Lango sub region. Most of the students and pupils from there who study in Buganda kingdom schools remained stranded atLiraBusParkas there was no taxi or bus to take them.

Consequently many pupils and students who study in central region from northern Ugandan have not reported to school today as per the programme.

In Masaka, Mbarara, Nakasongola, Mbale, Jinja and Iganga among other districts the passengers blamed the taxi and bus operators of hiking transport fares. There was heavy deployment of traffic police along the roads to curb road accidents.
