Journalism becoming a risky job for some

The new media control bill which has been in the works for a long time is aimed at putting more stringent conditions on media houses to publish only the truth, according to the government.

But the media practitioners in Uganda led by the Coordinator of Human Rights Network for Journalists, Wokulira Ssebaggala says journalists will find themselves in an awkward situation if such autocratic media proposed laws become operational.

Last week hundreds of journalists in Kampala walked out of a meeting which Kayihura had organised to brief journalists about the intentions of the law.

According to Kayihura, the government also wants to accredit journalists covering demonstrations.

Recently journalists threatened to stop covering government press conferences after several of them were attacked and beaten last Thursday by security agents in Kampala who also confiscated their cameras.
